Why is this song in every retail store?

I remember shazaming this song called Slice by Five for Fighting after hearing it in a retail store, so when I listened to it on YouTube, I noticed the comments all seemed to mention how this song is spammed in retail stores and grocery stores. Why is this? The song is far from Five for Fighting's most popular song, but it seems strangely common in grocery stores and other retail outlets. Can someone explain this?

This one? I don't know, I guess it sits right in that band gap, where it's emotionally engaging but still bland and corporate enough for shoppers to keep on shopping.

I like the honesty of these, you can tell how they want to lull you like cattle... and I love how it's - form our modern perspective - antithetical to that intention by having an actual, skilled and human orchestra playing these, without effect pedals, synths or auto-tune. It tries hard to be bland, but actually has more humanity and musical structure than the modern pop slop you hear in shops now. Eerie... I know, I know muzak posting is *late*
