Why is TOR so jank?

This is probably a wrong explanation, but from what I understand, TOR has to go through a lot more hoops to get you to your destination than clearnet.
You're actually correct! It works differently, so the behavioral weirdness is going to be for different reasons.

Tor is like being behind nine proxies, but they actually do encryption shit.

I suspect much of the jank is the site being DDOS'd via Tor (or normie-net) but some of it is Tor itself.

I think we don't actually "leave" Tor when hitting the main KF servers but I've no idea.
 
Hopping around multiple random nodes and relays around the world causes severe latency. There's time spend encrypting and decrypting data. Nodes and relays are also under attack regularly and DDOS attacks still occur on TOR. Darket markets are usually DDOS'd by competitors and those looking for a payout to stop which slows the entire network.
