Payment Processors / Visa / Mastercard / Discover / Stripe / PayPal / Banks
Payment processors (or card networks) help move money when you pay with a credit or debit card. When you swipe or tap your card, the payment processor sends your payment information to the card network (like Visa or Mastercard), which checks with your bank to make sure you have enough money. If it’s approved, the money moves from your bank to the store’s bank. The whole process takes just a few seconds. Payment processors handle the technology and connections, while card networks make the rules and help move the payment safely. When you want to get paid online in the USA, you have to do business with these "financial services". The complexity of this mechanism is deliberately designed to obfuscate who is doing what and making which decisions.
- You and your bank receiving money.
- The payment processor that negotiates you as a customer.
- There is sometimes a separate company called a payment gateway that provides an interface between your application and the payment processor, but most modern payment processors roll their own payment gateway.
- The underwriting banks that maintain a relationship between the payment processors and payment networks. These underwriting banks maintain the direct relationship with the card networks and have veto on if you get to be a customer of the payment processor. Some payment processors work with multiple underwriting banks. For instance, Citi is an large underwriting bank that is friendly with guns, so NFA merchants will often be paired with Citi for selling guns.
- The card networks. These are MasterCard, Visa, Discover, and American Express (Amex).
It could have been the payment processor directly, receiving complaints from people who want to deplatform you. It could be the underwriting bank who for whatever reason was unhappy with your transactional volume. If you sell too much, or sell too little and then do an annual sale that suddenly spikes your sales from $0 to a lot, that could be a fraud indicator. It could be a card network that decided you are a "reputational risk" to their brand. You will never know who, what, when, where, or why, and you will not be given a chance to appeal, and you will not be given information so if you try to apply for another card you know what to do right the next time.
This thread details most of the examples with certain payment processors censoring or "deplatforming" certain people that were either complained about by others, or are considered a "brand risk". These are their stories.
Card Networks (Visa, Mastercard, Discover etc)

Card Networks are companies that connects banks, stores, and customers to make card payments work. When you use a credit or debit card, the card network (like Visa, Mastercard, American Express, or Discover) helps check if you have enough money, approves the payment, and moves the payment information between your bank and the store’s bank. Card networks also set the rules for how payments are processed and charge small fees for using their system. As mentioned above, if you break any of these rules at any time, you may find yourself immediately unable to make money. If that happens, you will not be told why.
As of 2024, Visa and Mastercard together process approximately 81.9% of global card transactions, with Visa handling about 50.1% and Mastercard about 31.8%. This combined share represents a significant portion of the global payment processing market. Visa and Mastercard's combined market share is estimated to be around 35–40% globally. Being kicked by these Card Networks/Payment Processors is a huge deal, and is an especially huge deal for Payment Gateways (such as Stripe/PayPal/Cashapp etc.) In this segment, we will go over various people that have been banned for violating "rules" from Payment Processors.
Activists in early 2019 ended up forcing Mastercard to do a vote by the shareholders (archive) on a proposal to monitor payments to "global far-right political leaders and white supremacist groups". In addition, they would establish a "internal human rights committee that will stop designated white supremacist groups and anti-Islam activists.

Southern Poverty Law Center went after the Jewish Conservative activist David Horowitz. In particular, SPLC deemed his think-tank David Horowitz Freedom Center as a hate group. (archive) SPLC says he has "become a driving force of the anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant and anti-black movements". Because of this, the SPLC had convinced Mastercard and Visa to block the Freedom Center from receiving payments and donations via credit card in an email he sent out to supporters, urging them to send money via check to a P.O Box. The image below is that message.

Robert Spencer is an American anti-Muslim author and blogger, and one of the key figures of the counter-jihad movement, founding a website called "Jihad Watch". Jihad Watch had a Patreon account, and one day on August 15th, 2018, Patreon banned Robert. One of the Patreon support team members April, said that they have been notified "BY MasterCard that we must remove your account from Patreon, effective immediately. Mastercard has a stricter set of rules and regulations than Patreon, and they must reserve the right to not offer their services to accounts of their choosing. This is in line with their terms of service, which means it's something we have to comply by". (Article)

In tweets, Patreon even confirms this statement (archive) and reinforces that Mastercard did require Patreon to remove Robert's account.

Patreon also had a surprise creator policy update in 2021 (archive), where the payment processing networks like Mastercard have recently established procedures that affect platforms like ours which host adult/18+ content. This required Patreon to tighten up on 18+ content, requiring creators to confirm everyone is an adult with identification.

In a Community Happenings post by @Harm, @Harm highlights Fansly (OnlyFans competitor) that all furries and their "content" are considered "simulated bestiality" by their payment processors. In order to comply with the payment processor's policies and continue processing payments, that "content" is now forbidden.

PornHub & Mindgeek were targetted by Visa & Mastercard & ended up disabling payments. (Archive) The reason for this is a federal judge denied Visa's motion to dismiss a lawsuit by a woman who accuses the processor of knowingly allowed & facilitated the distribution of child pornography on PornHub & other sites operated by the Mindgeek company. The CEO & Chairman of Visa Al Kelly said he strongly disagrees with the court's decision and is confident in his position.

The social network Gab ran by lolcow Andrew Torba was also blacklisted by Visa for "promoting hate speech". (archive)

Fudd Busters, hosted by (practicing) firearms lawyer Matt Larosiere, published a video about the issues FFLs (Federal Firearms Licensee, an individual or company allowed to manufacture, import, and/or sell firearms) have been facing in regards to payment processors. Payment processors routinely deny service to FFLs due to them being “high-risk businesses” and/or for thinly veiled political reasons.
Behind the scenes, Visa & Mastercard forced Valve to ban all "content that may violate the rules and standards set forth by Steam’s payment processors and related card networks and banks, or internet network providers." This is Rule 15, and the screenshot below shows Steam's TOS page:

This ended up causing a massive hidden/ban wave, and caused developers to be compensated $100 per game on Steam. This ban mainly applied to mostly adult-only titles with explicit sexual content, like those involving incest, sexual assault, or other extreme themes. Around 3144 catalogued entries were found, but around 35 thousand games were hidden as a result of this ban wave. You can view this list here. (or see on SteamDB, but you have to login with Steam)

Steam previously said in 2018 that they wouldn't do this (archive), saying that they would allow "everything onto the Steam store, except for things that we decide are illegal, or straight up trolling".

A few days after this, itch.io (open marketplace for independent game creators) deindexed all adult NSFW content from the browse/search pages (archive), which itch.io says they were "under scrutiny from our payment processors regarding the nature of some content hosted on itch.io." Collective Shout was primarily the scapegoat for this, but further reading this article indicates that they are doing a "comprehensive audit of content to ensure we can meet the requirements of our payment processors. Part of this review will see some pages being permanently removed from itch.io. Affected accounts will be notified via their account’s email address from our support address."

Payment processors are insane monopolies themselves, but clearly you haven't seen:
Payment Gateways

At it's core, Payment Gateways are a technology platform that acts as an intermediary (between the Card Networks) in electronic financial transactions. It enables in-person and online businesses to accept, process, and manage various payment methods—such as credit cards, debit cards, and digital wallets—in a secure and efficient manner. Basically allowing customers to make online payments to their respective merchants when doing business. PayPal holds approximately 45.5% of the global online payment processing market, while Stripe occupies around 17.1% globally, placing it second among payment platforms.
Despite Stripe & PayPal taking up more than half of the global online payment processing market, these are the most censorious markets out there, ever. Let's take a look at some of these bans:

Powerchat, or known as powerchat.live, is a payment gateway that is sort of an alternative for StreamElements (which is another stream tool/monetization platform). This platform is primarily used by Cozy.tv, a streaming platform that was made by Nick Fuentes with the help of Alex Jones. As a result of constant complaining, on November 2nd, 2023, their Stripe account was closed (archive) "unexpectedly and without reason". Despite Powerchat trying to communicate with Stripe about why they were banned, they received no response other than that they broke "Stripe's Terms of Service and Policies".

Daily Wire commentator Michael Knowles was also debanked by Stripe, and this time he discovered this because his X payouts stopped working. In a twitter thread he posted (archive), he stated that he contacted both Stripe & X and both of them kept blaming each other for the problems. It was only until after X checked, they said that Stripe was restricting his account and that he would need to contact Stripe.

He also makes a 13 minute-ish video about his experience:
Later on, after he makes that thread, Stripe reaches out to him. They state that the restrictions were placed because of a "legally binding order that was issued". Later on, these restrictions were released.

This is not the only example however. @libsoftiktok, famously doxed by Journocow Taylor Lorenz, also had her Stripe account disabled (archive). It wasn't until she posted about it that a Stripe employee reached out to her, and told her that the "issue" was fixed.

Patrick Collison, the CEO of Stripe, said that it was "unrelated to libsoftiktok's views" (archive), and that "Stripe stands strongly for freedom of speech...We received a complaint from card networks about how their charge descriptors were causing customer confusion."

@Null, CEO of Lolcow LLC, had his Stripe account disabled. On Twitter, he reveals that Stripe "banned all of my business accounts for being a restricted business". Despite multiple attempts to reach out to employees over email, tweets, etc, Null received no response on his ban and was never reinstated.

Stripe was encouraged by Liz Fong-Jones (see this thread) to deplatform Gab (Andrew Torba) off of Stripe. Deplatform Hate, which is dedicated to deplatforming people (lol) also tried to bully off Gab off Stripe. Liz Fong-Jones was also upset that sex workers were affected by being deplatformed off Stripe.

Kanye West (yeezy.com) did a advertisement for his clothing brand, making a Nazi swastika shirt along with his album "HEIL HITLER". While doing this with a super bowl ad running, Shopify banned his store for, even after hateful speech was removed from their TOS. Later on, Shopify said this was because of "Risk of Fraud", rather than the Nazi swastika. Later on, yeezy.com went back up with a different brand store.

Reduxx, a popular news and commentary website for "pro-woman, pro-child safeguarding", was massreported by trannies which caused their Patreon account to be terminated. Some of the supporters also did not have their subscriptions cancelled, and Reduxx was not able to receive this money from Patreon supporters.

PayPal is one of the more eviler companies on this list. PayPal terminated The League of Social Democrats, one of Hong Kong’s last remaining pro-democracy activist groups. "Unfortunately, upon review of your account we have determined there to be excessive risks involved. Therefore, we will no longer be able to provide our services to you. While we wish you the best of success in your future business endeavors, we respectfully ask that you seek another payment solution to process transactions on your behalf". PayPal processes almost half of the global payments.
PayPal also terminated a veteran-owned conservative e-commerce company: Proof Products USA. Dana Peters, the owner of this company recieved an email from PayPal: “A recent review of your account activity identified products/services on your website violate PayPal’s Acceptable Use Policy. Specifically, brass paperweight” is Brass knuckles are not allowed. are associated with https://milspin.com/collections/solid-metal-paperweights and are not permitted on our platform (sic).” The email continues, stating that Proof Product USA’s “account has been limited temporarily” and that to resolve the issue Proof Products USA must either “remove” the brass knuckles listings or “remove or deactivate PayPal as a payment option for the violating items outlined above.”

Funnily enough, this isn’t the first time PayPal withehld funds from Proof Products USA. In 2021, Peters said that PayPal kept $90,000 from “Fake Masks Worldwide,” a different subsidiary online store of Proof Products USA, for selling “breathable masks.” Fake Masks Worldwide wrote in a November, 23rd press release: “The left leaning meat wallet organization of PayPal strikes again. They want us to delete all the products they don’t agree with from our website. So they’ve locked the account and are withholding all funds until we comply. We will not comply. Nerds. Any orders that were paid for via PayPal will still be fulfilled, because we aren’t thieves and we put our customers first, unlike PayPal.” (See this email here & archive). Eventually, Peters brought in lawyers to recover his original URL and the $90,000 PayPal was withholding from his company.

Speaking of businesses, this wasn't the only case, as Gumroad had to cease all NSFW hosted content once PayPal & Stripe demanded them to. Gumroad, an e-commerce company for creators, updated its rule to more strictly limit NSFW content, citing restrictions from payment processors like Stripe and PayPal.

One of the largest file hosts, Catbox.moe, has been removed by Patreon & Ko-fi for "a violation of [their] Terms Of Service or Content Guidelines" and asked for donations. The hobby project runs at $1,388/month & hosts 130+ TB of data, and pushes 1 petabyte of traffic per month. Patreon & Ko-Fi banned both of the hobby project's accounts, and right now has a merch store running with Stripe.

New York Post Journalist Colin Wright is a biologist, and has claimed "that biological sex is real, there are only two sexes, and the differences between males and females sometimes matter". This angered trannies in particular, and "trans activists" spam reported his Etsy & PayPal accounts. In Late April 2022, he received a out-of-the-blue email from PayPal: “You can no longer do business with PayPal.” It went on to say that, “After a review, we decided to permanently limit your account as there was a change to your business model or your business was considered risky.” It added that his funds were being withheld for up to 180 days. Etsy also banned his account had been permanently suspended for violating their policy against selling merchandise that “promotes, supports, or glorifies hatred or violence towards protected groups".

Ian Miles Cheong, famous Careercow and internet bloodsports "white supremacist", was banned from PayPal for his political views (archive). In an article by The Post Millennial (archive), Ian reinforces the same thing happened to him as did Colin Wright, where his funds were withheld for 180 days. PayPal's own CEO, Dan Schulman, said that "they can't advocate violence, hatred, or racial intolerance".

Toby Young (the founder of FSU, Daily Sceptic) had his personal account, the Free Speech Union (human rights group), and the Daily Sceptic PayPal accounts were all terminated and banned by PayPal. PayPal withheld all funds from these accounts and he was not permitted to make an account again (per Daily Mail).

After a bunch of backlash that PayPal recieved, Toby Young's personal account & his other companies were reinstated. In an email, PayPal wrote to Toby: " We take seriously the input from our customers and stakeholders. Based on these ongoing reviews, we have made the decision to reinstate your account." Despite this, Toby Young was not happy about this ban and decided to never use PayPal again for its services.

Later on, Free Speech Union would fight against this ban in the United Kingdom (archive), in which they compiled thousands upon thousands of examples of financial services/payment processors censoring people for their lawful views.

PayPal would ban Alex Jones & his company InfoWars (A&N), Infowars was informed by PayPal on Thursday night that it would have 10 business days to find a new payment processor.

PayPal would also blacklist Bitchute (alternative YouTube platform) and permanently limit, with immediate effect, and that they will no longer be able to accept or send payments. Bitchute's CEO Ray Vahey also confirms this in a blogpost, that they have had a PayPal account since 2016, and they were banned in 2018 for "violation of the Acceptable Use Policy".

The Proud Boys, a neo-nazi organization, mass reported antifa columnists of "This Week in Fascism" and got them permanently suspended by Patreon for violating it's anti-doxing policy. Patreon refused their appeal.

PayPal had begun quitely shuttering Left-Wing media accounts (archive), in particular several independent news outlets and journalists have had their PayPal accounts abruptly canceled and their funds frozen by the company for unspecified offenses. These outlets also happened to have dissented in various ways from official orthodoxy on the Ukraine war. In particular, they targeted these organizations: Consortium News (founded by the late Associated Press investigative legend Robert Parry), MintPress News (a left-wing web-based outlet based out of Minnesota). The ADL targeted both of these orgs in particular.

The adult game "Lewd Idol Project" launched a Kickstarter. The project raised a total of $35,116. Toffer Team stored their Kickstarter proceeds in a PayPal account. Unfortunately, that account has now been locked and Toffer Team has found itself without any access to its funds whatsoever. (archive) Toffer explained that their PayPal account was locked because according to PayPal their "business was oriented towards 'sexual materials or services' (sic)".

Milo Yiannopoulos was banned off Patreon after being on the platform for just one day. Dick Masterson (Juju the Cow), and Sargon of Akkad were also scared of banned off of Patreon. Patreon confirmed Milo was banned for "association with or supporting hate groups on Pateron" (archive).

PayPal announced a partnership with the ADL to supply them with transaction history and records of usernames and personal details (archive), so the ADL can cut them off from using PayPal and attack them more clandestinely through antifa and other allied proxy forces. PayPal already has a record of targeting those who oppose child murder and similar crimes. For example, PayPal cut off UK charity 'War on Want' (archive), for opposing the rape and murder of Palestinian children. PayPal censors users from making donations with notes like 'freedom for cuba', while transactions earmarked for 'snuff films' are allowed (archive).

In leaked images from PayPal Seminar, it revealed an explicit racial bias against White customers. (archive) In particular, they primarily terminated a lot of accounts against "white nationalist" activity. In the 4th image below, you can see that the company goes on to give specific examples to train censors in spotting ideas and individuals that must be silenced. Most of the individuals and groups mentioned are not particularly radical, much less violent or dangerous.

Banks

Banks are financial institutions that are licensed to accept deposits and make loans, acting as intermediaries between people who have money (depositors) and people who need money (borrowers). Their primary functions include providing a safe place to store money, extending loans for personal or business use, and facilitating payments and transactions. While the closing of a bank is technically less egregious than having your entire means of funding closed by a Payment Processor/Card Company as you could always just switch to a different bank, that doesn't make it any less horrifying to know that one day all your personal funding will be inaccessible to you with no ways of taking your funds out. These are the examples below of banks freezing or closing consumer's accounts without notice, starting with Bank of America.
Bank of America denied @Null's 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization USIPS (United States Internet Preservation Society). @Null posted a response (archive) he received via email about his application, he was told he would have to request in person. Null went there in person, and a representative directed him (archive) to submit, by physical mail, a copy of his credit report from "Early Warning".

Bank of America also debanked a Memphis-based Christian charity called the Indigenous Advance Ministries. (Archive / A&N) Indigenous Advance Ministries, which provides critical aid to orphans in Uganda, has served since its founding in 2015. Advocating for pro-life and traditional marriage views, the charity has been transparent about its religious beliefs, but maintains that these beliefs should not have influenced its banking situation. The image you see below is what they received in the mail. The charity had $270,000 frozen in their deposit account, they sought explanation and assistance from the Tennessee Attorney-General’s office. You can read this complaint here. (archive)

Famously, Axos Bank debanked Alex Jones (archive). The bank shut down the accounts of Alex Jones’ media company, citing unauthorized transactions — a move that caused panic at the business when its balances suddenly dropped from more than $2 million to zero, according to a lawyer for the company. The bank also indicated there were unauthorized transactions, but didn’t go into detail, he said. He said the bank informed Jones’ company that it would be sending a cashier’s check for the total balance. At the request of Jones' lawyers, Axos reopened the accounts for 30 days but did not extend the relationship beyond that.

Kanye West was debanked by JP Morgan/Chase bank (archive / A&N) after "anti-Semitic" comments were posted onto his Twitter account. However, the bank kicked him out for no particular reason stating there was no official reason given, and it was suspected that he was kicked for his "anti-Semetic" comments on Twitter.

Here's a more absurd one: A democrat candidate backed Medical Marijuana and the bank Wells Fargo closed her bank account (archive). Nikki Fried ran a lobbying firm called "Igniting Florida" and described herself as “one of most visible faces and key activists in Florida’s burgeoning medical cannabis industry.” Employees at Wells Fargo, where her campaign held an account, had questions about her platform. The bank, which says it has a policy against serving marijuana-related businesses, had noticed that Ms. Fried was “advocating for expanded patient access to medical marijuana.” The campaign replied that, yes, Ms. Fried would be receiving donations from lobbyists as well as “executives, employees and corporations in the medical marijuana industry.” The campaign said it had received written notice that Wells Fargo was closing its account.

Wells Fargo also closed various industry sex workers bank accounts. This was because of a crackdown measure banks and other large institutions have been implementing over the years. This practice is called "red dotting" where a "red flag is placed on internal records … (alerting) different divisions in the bank not to do any business with certain clients" (see this post). JP Morgan/Chase bank also did the same thing with debanking sex workers (archive). In some instances, the people that were affected weren't even sex workers after a decade, and were just one day randomly debanked.

After Donald Trump became President for his 2nd term, Citi Bank rescinds a policy that restricted dealings with sellers of firearms (archive). Previously, Citi implemented the policy in 2018 after the Parkland school shooting in Florida, which left 17 people dead.

In July 2020 the Barclays bank suspended its facilities for the Core Issues Trust and the International Federation for Therapeutic and Counselling Choice. The trust is a non-profit Christian ministry, based in Northern Ireland. It is the only Christian ministry of its kind in the UK and a registered charity, but LGBT activists claim it is carrying out conversion therapy. After multiple calls & rape threats from LGBT activists, the trusts accounts were closed. This caused the trust to sue Barclays (archive), and the Barclays settled with the trust with the offer of £21,500 in compensation, including legal fees which the Trust accepted. Barclays claimed that the bank did not discriminate based on political issues.
