So of all the stupid-ass Chinese crap you can buy, this old man is thinking of getting a water proof/resistant speaker for the bathroom. The point would be to listen to podcasts and shit while relaxing in the tub and soaking my canceraids ridden carcass. Josh talking about feeders, Rekieta screaming at Lawtwitter, Jim laughing at whatever, etc.

The phone that serves as a transmitter would be no more than 20 feet away, outside the bathroom, but it would have to transmit through a cheapass bathroom door you commonly find in apartments (we're not talking about solid oak here).

Does anybody forsee a technical issue with this, or have any experience with these things?

For starters, wireless blue tooth speakers are somewhat inexpensive to buy, at least as electronics; Best Buy has moderately sized ones for about 50 - 80 dollars, while big portable ones go up to about 100.

As for waterproofed ones, not too keen on that. But that's the quote.

Will the signal penetrate a cheap bathroom door though? I know BT is high frequency and low power, which suggests line of sight.

Hell, forget the 50 dollar ones. You can get one for 5 dollars in certain stores (like Five Below), though the things are built about as cheaply as you'd imagine. Still, the sound quality's usually not half-bad and it can be good enough to get the job done.

Now as for your question Captain Manning. I have said cheap-ass blue tooth speaker. I don't know what kind of phone or bluetooth component you're using, but most of the transmitters are built to handle at least 10 meters distance. I just tested with an iPhone 5s and an iPhone 8, and was able to pick up that speaker through a bathroom apartment wall and closed door about 20 feet away. I think you'll be fine.

Y'all niggas missing out on the newest, hottest dank shit from CES2020: Wired bluetooth speakers.

there's a ton of ipX7 - IPX8 rated bt speakers out there. Look for the rating on the box. Some of them float, have little speaker rafts. Most will have rubber covers to cover the charge and aux ports. different speaker wattages and battery life.

The only shitty thing is waterproof means that water won't fuck up the electronics, ti doesn't mean the speaker will make sound if it gets wet. The one i have is an Ion Dunk and it sounds very quiet after water gets on the speaker cone. it's fine after it dries out. Once you find a speaker with the right ip rating, it's a matter of figuring out the sound system specs like loudness, frequencies, number of speakers, etc. the dunk is plenty loud for podcasts.

I've owned one of these for two years:
Oontz Angle 3 Ultra (Amazon Link)

It's not waterproof but it's splashproof (IPX-6). I listen to podcasts or music almost every day when I take a shower. It sits on the back of the toilet and hasn't suffered from the constant exposure to humidity.

It's about the size of a 16oz can of beer. It gets very loud for it's size.

About range, you should have no problems with any decent phone/speaker doing BT through doors or a wall or two at 20 feet. I've used it with two different phones and the only problem I had was a latency issue. That was resolved with a firmware upgrade.

At $35, I've been very satisfied. At the same time I bought this speaker I also purchased an Ultra Ears Roll 2 which retailed for around $100 (luckily I only spent $45) . The sound quality was lacking imo and it certainly wasn't worth the retail price. I ended up gifting it to a friend. So keep in mind that paying more doesn't always guarantee better quality.

I got one of those ugly suction cup pink ones they get in at the cheap section of Target. Not submersible but good for shower. Worked fine until the charging cord broke or vanished or whatever happened. Usually kept the phone in the bathroom with me, not sure about 20' through a door.
Sound quality was okay. Nothing horrible or anything but not flawless reproduction, but fuck it there's a shower going so who cares.
