TLDR: Wizardry 8 is an old-school RPG that features a party-based system where you control a group of 6 adventurers exploring a sci-fi/fantasy world. Our sole objective is to gather the necessary artifacts to achieve godhood and defeat the Dark Savant (space reddit overlord).

Now, on to the fun stuff! There are 15 unique classes in this game. I'll give you a short description of each one:

lord.jpgLord - Balanced tank, self-healing, likes to use shields, fearless
valkyrie.jpg
Valkyrie - Spear-wielder, can dispel undead, ability to cheat death

Here's a more detailed list of the classes if you're interested.

I won't mention races here, because we're using custom portraits (your profile pictures) for the characters anyway. I've imported myself as an example:

If you want me to use something that isn't your pfp, just let me know.

Here's what I'll need from you:
  • Class (1 pick per person, for the sake of variety)
  • Sex (Honestly, I'm just going to pick based on your pfp. If you want something else, provide a different picture.)
Also, if you REALLY want to pick a race, you can. Different races give you different stats so I'll just minmax if you don't pick one. Here's a link to a list of races. Once we've assembled our team of 6, I'll post updates of the LP with screenshots and the occasional video. Credit to @c-no for the idea.

You can count me in, altho I'm gonna check out in a few so don't expect me to stick around right now.

Don't use my username, just call my player "HENRY". He's a male human fighter(how original). Stats are whatever, the joke here is that he really likes penis and enjoys unprotected gay sex. Otherwise, you can do what you want with him.

Good god man, you really are salty about KD2 huh? I see where you're coming from, but at this point it's rent free in your head. I am NOT APOLOGIZING FOR DOUBLE POSTING.

@Dreadnought Also, tangentially related to the thread. What mods and setup are you using to get the game to not shit the bed? I've got it in my library but haven't been able to get it to work.

I got it through GOG and it works just fine out of the box. Have you messed with the 'nglide_config.exe' file yet?

This game is great, lots of variety to build characters and space for your own head kino instead of shitty pre built companions. Got filtered after the tutorial dungeon by the constant combat though. You couldnt walk a meter without some fight breaking out, and then when I finally arrived in the town its overrun by monsters and the same shit as in the wilderness. And then my wookie psionic left me because his planet needed him. Too much for me, maybe I should give it another shot.
Make a wookie psionic in that traitors honor, chaotic voice, as a pfp use the bear from pic related, I guess you could use the boykisser but fuck that faggot shit.

The Wizardry games are an exercise in suffering. If you imported your party from 6 to 7, the starting location varied depending on the ending you got. One of the possible starts plops your de-leveled party in an area where all the random encounters straight up murder you very easily, and I just had to save/load repeatedly until I could manage to stumble out of the area.

I tried playing the very first one (Mad Overlord) on a variety of platforms and I just couldn't get the hang of it. I can barely figure out how to get to the first dungeon after creating the party members and even when I do they all die quickly. I will need a walkthrough to beat them

I kinda wanna play 6-7-8 with one party. I found out you can do this a few years ago but I'm a bit too young to really appreciate these real boomer CRPG dungeon crawlers, so I have this on the lower end of my backlog. Is there a good guide on the best builds and how to get these games running on current software?

Also, are we doing this or what? We should have enough players for a party of 6 if OP counts himself.

I only played through the series a few years ago. There's definitely a lot of jank, but I feel it's worth it if you like extremely challenging games, even if they're sometimes more than a little bullshit.

I couldn't find any easy guide, but apparently the GoG version has some bug fixes included that are fucked in the final version, so I'd imagine it works with little to no fuss. A regular copy of Wiz6 has bugs like level 7 damage spells not working on enemies, and your carry capacity never increasing after character generation. An Wiz6/7/8 editor called Cosmic Forge lets you install patches, and it apparently works with the GoG versions as well.

Apologies team I got caught up in some IRL happenings *sigh* Will have to start the run tomorrow. If we don't have a 6th by then, I'll just add myself.

I played these back when they came out - don't know how enjoyable they'd be to modern gamers who grew up with automapping, in-game save points, tutorials, and the other conveniences, but it'll be interesting to see what you think of it. Do you have a copy of the manual? It'll tell you how to get into the dungeon, and also documents all the spells. I think it also tells you that MAHALITO is a fireball, and MOLITO does electrical damage - things that will help you figure out which monsters will be immune.

Tips: Get some graph paper to map the levels. Early on, leave the dungeon frequently to rest. Create a character who never adventures and leave him in the village - your adventurers' inventories are going to fill up with gear, and there's no in-game system to store items that aren't in inventory, so from time to time you'll need to add your unplayed character to the party and hand him extra potions or other gear that you want to hang on to for later.

I-III were mostly about killing monsters and leveling up so you could go down deeper and fight new monsters. V (Heart of the Maelstrom) had more puzzle elements - you could talk to NPCs to get clues or trade for quest items and some areas were gated with riddles. It might be a better starting point than Mad Overlord.

To play the originals, you made a floppy disk that you put in, and when your characters died, they were dead - if you wanted a "save" to go back to, you made a second disk and occasionally switched to it. You'd put a piece of tape over the notch to make it read-only and only take the tape off when you were ready to save your party again.

@Dreadnought - good luck and Godspeed! Looking forward to seeing your playthrough.
