I was in middle/high school when Sarah J. Maas' works (A Court of Thorns and Roses) were at peak popularity, and I vividly remember girls daring each other to read the explicit passages out loud at the lunch table and just collapsing into giggling each time.

I also remember when Colleen Hoover's books blew up a few years later, and every girl in the grade had to read those books or else she wouldn't really be able to really participate in the "in-group" conversations or any socialization centered around the latest Colleen Hoover book.

The sheer extent to which these explicit YA "novels" (which are marketed to girls as young as 12-13) have come to dominate the social lives and hobby scenes of young women and girls is just depressing, honestly.

Something similar happened with a group of boys I saw on the train. They were daring each other to say PENIS in the middle of a sentence loudly.

Kids can say filthy stuff (and have always done so) but they are just kids and think it's funny. However they are also surrounded by the most degenerate shit out there and can easily watch it/ read it & that's only a recent phenomen (I'd say 20-25 years).

Eh, that's not really anything new. Reading ACOTAR aloud is kinda tame by the standards of your average millennial high school lunchroom conversation and we had a bunch of popular books that were pretty risque (I think of Anne Rice and Neil Gaiman which were both in our school library).

The difference is that ACOTAR is smutty without actually being good or insightful lmao. Interview with a Vampire is hugely homoerotic but it's an allegory on the AIDS crisis and also tries to capture the feeling of being an outcast watching the world move on without you. American Gods has sex scenes with a dead lady and a scene where a man is consumed by a vagina but it's supposed to be about American cultural anthropology and the nature of belief.

I'm not convinced that Maas has any depth at all other than inventing scenarios where girls have fanfiction-tier sex with impossibly attractive fairy dudes. And I think that's the real problem with her books. It's the equivalent of the spicy romance novels teen girls have always read but packaged in a way that makes it seem more respectable.

Is it like watching a whale shark eat?

She gave an interview where she practically admitted to being such a fan of smut that she wanted to write a character who was unabashedly slutty without being slut-shamed for it. The thing is, we don't get to see her having sex until "it's plot-important" but in the first book the whole time she's pining for some dude we only see once before she gets spirited away only she denies it every time and the scene had cut away before they even get it on. I think Maas just wanted to virtue-signal about how girls should ride the dick carosal consequence-free and she doesn't actually want to write her self-insert going to town on every guy she meets, just the fairies after teasing the audience multiple times.

(I need to return to the sporking, I think I've mentally recovered long enough.)

Kinda? They included it in the TV adaptation of American Gods (weird how it's one of the few faithful parts of that adaptation lmao). It's been a while since I've read it since I've cooled on Gaiman significantly (even before his sex pestery came to light) but iirc Bilquis rides him and his body slowly gets smaller and smaller as her vagina sucks him up.

Ironically enough - if Maas' books had slut-shaming and the core arc was about the MC fighting back against the shaming and social strictures to fully manifest her hyper-slut magic powers, it'd be 100x more meaningful than the books as they currently are.

Ohhh so she has a literal black hole for a vagina.

She's Livejournal stock, she would literally die from writing scenes of slut-shaming.

I'll admit I'm a sucker for the occasional hardback with a pretty dust jacket or cool cover, especially if it's an author or series I really like. On the other hand I will happily walk into a used bookstore and come out with an armload of beat-up old books for like a third of what I'd pay at B&N or Amazon. Finding good used books at a reasonable price hits me probably like how heroin hits for an addict.
I might be autistic but I find slightly beat up books charming. Like paperbacks with wrinkle lines on the cover. That nigga opened it a lot of times. Maybe he actually read it.

You guys weren't kidding. This shit is getting nuts.

"Holy shit, who could've predicted this" plot aside, I don't want to be the fetish of every random Asian-American quirk chungus girl.
They say don't judge a book by its cover but sometimes when the title is literally "Lindsey Cheng dates a White Boy!!!" the cover is all you need. The whole narrative will just be ... uh ... Lindsey Cheng ... dating ... a white boy. Wowza!!! Definitely didn’t see that coming.

Hernan Cortez Tames An Amazon Girl
Content warning: Historical slave rape kink

Last month I asked a woman what she was reading, and she showed me this:
https://www.amazon.com/Willing-Prey-Allie-Oleander-ebook/dp/B0F3Z1G1QF
Divorced and buried in student loan debt, Claire Collins eagerly enters a spicy business agreement with an acquaintance who wants to explore his primal desires. The deal is simple: thirty days as his sexual prey, $30,000 in her bank account. All she has to do is give Shane Underwood the hunt of his life.

I read the whole thing. I didn't think my standards could get any lower.
I love video games with a passion, but it's kind of a given that most people just treat them like a big joke. Reading books like this causes me much more mental damage by comparison. Seeing them succeed and take up headspace is indescribably blackpilling. There is only one solution for me...

welcome to late stage capitalism.

Garbage novels devoid of anything save titillation for women are nothing new, but I don't think they've ever been this obscene. The amount of women who openly admit they read this pornography in public is shocking.
Welcome to the digital age where necessary censorship and any old notion of social decorum is now nonexistent. Online anonymity is a hell of a weapon.

We need to bully the smut for women back into the romance section where it belongs. I'm not sure it's possible when considering that the majority of under 40s lack basic vocabulary and reading comprehension. YA is as far as they have developed their skills.

I'm at the point where I believe the smut we're seeing isn't even "romance" anymore, it's literally become its own genre of debauchery. You can have mindless, meaningless sex without the romance, after all, and a lot of this shit reads like that. Complete unattachment between characters who only exist as hollow shells for the reader to self-insert into to jill herself off to.

So no, this garbage doesn’t belong in the romance section either. It needs to get banished to its own corner of some seedy adult store and stay there (of which I'll be shocked if adult stores don't do this already, it's such easy money).

This is kinda why I'm hesitant to get extremely up-in-arms about trashy LitRPG stuff or romantasy. We live in an era when literacy and attention spans are in the toilet. Even reading garbage is better than what most people get up to.

The penis game was a thing when I was in middle school 25 years ago. With a group of your boys and the person to say penis loudest in a public setting wins.
