Youtube Shrinking

  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.
I haven't, but I would like to take a moment to bitch about YouTube constantly changing things without saying anything or having any apparent reason for it. Drives me fucking insane, I hate YouTube so much.

God knows I'll keep using the piece of garbage, though. I weened myself off of Google years ago, but it just doesn't seem logistically possible for anybody to quite replace YouTube.

because they shut down most viable competitors back in the day and all the current competitors are streaming services or social media, which are kinda different.

Sometimes I get random shit happening with my YouTube, mostly UI changes or something fucky with the player, for a few days without warning then it reverts back to normal. My schizo theory is that they're testing stuff by randomly giving UI aids to some users, gather whatever data/statistics with the new features, then they roll it back once they got what they wanted.

Videos that had bigger video players?
I'm not sure what you mean, the display of the video (the box that contains the video) should be 16:9, and inside, the video itself with its unique viewport should adapt to that box.

Now if that box has shrinked, you can try using "theater mode" (the rectangle in the controls bar) which should resize it so that it occupies the full width of your screen.

Just like with the cutting off the names, it's possible that the reason is them trying to optimize for mobile users.

They've been doing that since a long time ago, I believe one example is when they took out the /about section of channels and replaced it with the box that now pops up by clicking "more" instead, which is more annoying for PC and very clearly designed for mobile.

Yes, YouTube is being catered to TikTokers and people who unironically use the word "rizz".

Have not seen this before, but eversince I got my new phone I notice the YT app can't play a video longer than one minute without freezing. Vanced has the same issue.

Also had a similar problem on YouTube dssktop, only on one specific Linux machine for a time. Had to use a command line program to browse YouTube and play in mpv.

It's also insane seeing all the ads after having ad blocks for years.

Congrats Google for making me actually use Invidious instead of buying your stupid premium. Should have just left me alone

Google is ten years into their boeing-arc but gayer. Everything good they turn to shit. And then the shit gets AIDS
Notice how they got rid of their old motto "Don't be evil"?

That has always been one of my biggest problems with that place. They always make major changes with no warning or user input. They don't care if people complain because they know they have a de facto monopoly on video sharing. I remember when they overhauled the look of user profiles in 2009. Everyone complained that it looked like shit, but YouTube ignored them and everyone was forced to get used to it. Then there was the even bigger shitstorm in November 2013 when they forced all YouTube users to sign up for Google+. Funny thing is, they shut down Google+ years later because no one was using it despite being forced to make accounts for it.

It's unlikely that YouTube will be replaced anytime soon, but you can still use a frontend like Invidious so you don't have to use the site directly.

Haven't run into this yet thank god but it's still cancer. My big problem with youtube is how increasingly 1080p and 720p vids get crunched to 420p and 180p ,and 240p ends up looking lke 50p. No this is not a "oh the computer screen is just higher res now 4k is the future guys!" because I've been observing this decline over the last 8 fucking years on my 1080p computer monitor. Seriously upload a video in 180p or 720p and see what I'm talking about if you have the time. The quality shits the bed and there's weird artifacting everywhere if the screen is still for a bit.

EDIT: Wait wait wait, by "video player shrinking" do you mean vids that were once widescreen format randomly becoming box format or even fucking SHORTS? Because that's happened to a weird amount of older videos I've watched the last few years. IIRC when I looked into that theones turning into shorts was an automatic algorithm process like the "marked for kids" shit was at the start if it detected a video under a certain time span, and they never undid it,so you have a bunch of old videos now in gross mobile crunched portrait mode format. Not so sure about the ones that changed to box format though.

I liked comments bottom recommmends on the side.

I ber there was 12 months of ideation and "design meetings" to justify that change

that's how they're gonna save on bandwidth, by shrinking the video they're sending out to people
