You are right that European people have only begun to identify as white when they have to live around blacks but I've always viewed white as really just an American thing, in the sense that it just means white American which is a new European derived ethnicity that is in the process of being formed, made up of a mix of ethnicities from the old countries, similar to how the Anglo gene pool is made up of Briton, Celtic, Anglo-Saxon, Viking and Norman DNA. We are just in the beginning stage of it, at least that's how it should have been. We probably fucked it up permanently by letting in the third world.
