I think it's less about beating women and more about wanting success in their chosen field. And it just so happens that men are generally stronger than women, and thus they make easier targets than other men. This, in turn, makes this man's success easier to achieve. It's true. The troon's internet persona, as opposed to his flesh and blood self, is an example of a 'man-created woman'. Such entities exist in various forms, the most obvious being fictional characters created by men to exist in their invented realms.* They aren't real women, on the basis that they haven't got a genuinely female origin. They may, in films for instance, have the appearance and qualities of real women, they are almost always played by real female actresses, but they still aren't quite the real thing (assuming the actress has to stick to the script and isn't allowed to interpret). She may look and talk and act like a woman, but something somewhere will be off. It's sometimes hard to pinpoint, but the reader or listener or viewer will sometimes find him or herself wondering why no women in real life are quite like the fictional character. She was created by a man, is the answer. A man who doesn't quite understand what makes women tick, so fills in the gaps as best he can. He has to revert to his own ways of understanding the world, which leads to male elements being added to the character's makeup.

Same with the internet persona of the troon. It has all the advantages of the fictional man creation: it can appear in the form it chooses, it can even speak in a female voice thanks to synthesizers. It's still not real, however. It's just a puppet with a man pulling the strings.

The funny thing about it all, at least from what men have told me, is that they often prefer the man-created ideal to the real thing. They relate to it more easily, presumably because it shares interests and behaves in a more predictable manner. It's safer, somehow. Nobody wants the She-Devil after all!!

Ergo, troons are likely to exploit that affinity for sexual gratification. Can men tell the difference? I suspect not, sometimes, which is a shame.

*This is not to advance the argument that men can't write 'real' female characters. Some can. Lots can't, however, and that's the point.

Very true, and I would say some version of this exists for women writers writing male characters. We tend to enjoy sensitive males in fiction, especially in romance, and these male characters don't always seem to have a manly side of their lives where they hang out with male friends and do guy stuff. They are kind of just there to fall in love and become their sensitive, authentic selves in front of a woman who has stripped away their defenses. The female version of this kind of character is someone who can hang with the guys and be badass but will also be sensitive and vulnerable when it's time for romance.

I don't criticize these kinds of characters, especially, because I think they both speak to the sexes' longing for connection and people doing their best to understand and love people who they don't FULLY get. They just know that at some point men become vulnerable and women become strong to make this crazy human thing work.

But when you look to stories for a pure reflection of reality and not poetic license, you have a problem. And that's why the obsession with representation is bizarre sometimes. It means people "steal" female characters that they think are Really Troons, or people get mad at the Manic Pixie Dream Girl trope because they don't know real women like that. Those women don't have to be entirely realistic to say something that is "real" about the story being told.

I think it can obviously go too far where that's the ONLY kind of woman you see in films or whatever, but it doesn't have to be a bad thing. It has clearly BECOME a problem for MTFs because they think they get it and they don't.

I was thinking about this the other day. I know most of the Kindness talk is in the tranch thread, but these people always claim headmates that speak another language, but they never TALK in that language, they just speak broken English. It’s almost like it’s all made up and they don’t actually know the other language.
