I'm a fan of extreme metal but I've always found Converge HIGHLY overrated. They have one or two interesting songs and I suppose fans would argue that there's a lot of emotion behind the noise but for the most part they just sound like a barrel of cats being kicked down a fire escape.

It's Guns 'n' Roses's worst song, for a start, but mainly it's because when I was at university there was this irritating lad in my dorm who'd play the opening to it on his acoustic guitar AND NOTHING ELSE every time he heard someone coming down the corridor, because he thought it'd help him pick up chicks.

Technically, Converge was considered Hardcore, not Metal. Hardcore kids and metal kids didn't really like each other in the 00s, and what you're saying here was one of the reasons - hardcore kids thought metal was faggy artsy pop music, and metal kids thought hardcore was faggy tryhard scream noises.

Slight powerlevel: I was at that very show, and I'm pretty sure I saw that set too. NEMHF was one of the few venues you could go to and find neutral ground between the metal and hXc scenes. The bands tended to get segregated by stage, but people were polite to each other, and there was usually a solid core of headliner bands that could bring fans of both genres together (essentially KILLSWITCH and whomever Killswitch wanted to drag along with them that year)

In hardcore's defense, it really is a lot of fun if you're at a show. Listening to hardcore on it's own, simply for the sake of listening, is as productive as beating your head against a sheetrock wall. But a live venue, with loads of noise, and several hundred drunk Massholes doing kung fu moves, is definitely memorable. I would 100% take Pantera over Converge for pure listening enjoyment, and I'd also 100% take seeing Pantera live over seeing Converge live too, but still - the point of hardcore is, it's less about the music, and more about the experience.

Opeth, CoB, and Pantera were three of my peer groups' favorite bands, so you would have fit right in with the melodic/prog metal scene. Also, believe it or not, Opeth, CoB, Dimmu, and Lamb of God played at NEMHF, too. CoB wasn't there with Converge in 2003, but Opeth and Lamb of God were!

I saw them in Manchester, UK supporting Dream Theatre, which was a wierd mix, and in Leeds, UK when it was just them, in a room with about 100 people. It was fucking amazing.

Opeth are one of the reasons I don't follow the labels and sub genres, because how the hell do you define Opeth? Prog Metal for Black rose Immortal, Death metal for Deliverence, Rock for Spring MCMLXXIV, Instrumental for Persephone...I love em.

Stop trying to relive the heavy years and just accept your ballad future. Fade to Black, Sanitarium, Nothing Else Matters and the Unforgivens are top notch songs. Dirty Window and the rest of the tracks I can't remember are fucking terrible.

Death Magnetic was a good album, Hardwired to Destruction is St Anger: revisited, save for Halo on Fire and the cover of Blind Man Cries.

At college, one of my dorm mates liked to leave his door open with a mix CD playing with what sounded like Otherside on it multiple times, or else his shuffle really liked it. Just all the time. We did accidentally lock him out of his room once, because the door shut after we mostly shut it and he was too cool to actually go and get his key for the room, relying on his roommate to be there to open it.

Criminal Justice studying try-hard manlet who amusingly broke his leg playing intermural flag football and then decided to get in a fight with his girlfriend who was his main means of transportation while he had his cast on. I listened to the whole thing start to finish and was so angry when it ended that i snapped the CD in half and binned it. I had waited decades for that bob-rock inspired piece of shit. No solos? Da fuq. Kirk might as well not bothered turning up. The pots and pans sound of Lars' drums made it sound like he was playing on a kids drum set or shooting up the kitchen with a machine gun. The vocals were lazy and uninspired and the 'coach' they hired was a complete dick head. The whole thing was retarded. You don't wein a metal band off of drugs and alcohol before making their big come back. They've never recovered since.

It's not that I didn't like music anymore, but once you've been to an Opeth show, and you've really understood what Opeth is - I mean, really UNDERSTOOD Opeth, had it click and everthing - it's just super fucking hard to get into anything "metal" after that. They do heavy, they do soft, they do smart and progressive, they do catchy and fun; no matter what metal band you're listening to, it's like Opeth already did it as good, or possibly better, then the poor fuckers you're currently listening to.

I saw saw like a, god, might have been three hours, might have have been thirty hour set of theirs live, and to this day I dunno what the fuck was going on. I distinctly remember having this weird, I guess you could call it an out-of-body experience? I was sitting on a divider, between the bar and the pit area. Just sitting, listening, my mind a million fucking miles above the stage. Then, about halfway through, some guy in front of me gets up, turns around, and looks me dead in the face. He smiles like some wizzened old hippe-wizard, puts his arm on my shoulder, and says "enjoy the trip, man." Like I was baked out of my mind or something! But I wasn't. I was literally high on Opeth.

Dunno how the fuck that happened, but after that, I was like, I'm good. I don't need to be angry anymore. And while I didn't stop listening to metal entirely, Opeth kinda killed the urge, y'know?

Anyways, there's a whole load of Opeth-like bands, so many this would turn this thread into a spergfest; you probably know their producer, Steve Wilson, and all the projects he's connected with, but if not then check him out! And, of course, all the genre bands you probably know about already if you listen to CoB - stuff like Nightwish, In Flames, Dissection, etc.

But now that I'm a boomer, my favorite metal band/guy is probably Devin Townsend. He's different from Opeth - sillier, less of a hippie - but he's got that insane range of interests and Feels that makes people gravitate towards Opeth. I didn't like his stuff that much when I was in junior high and highschool (Strapping Young Lad, which was his extreme deathmetal project, and his work with Steve Vai, which was too 80s for me) but nowadays Devy's my top chillout band.

Been a HUGE help through quarantine, too.

I've heard of strapping young lad but never listened to their songs and Steve vai, while a wierd duck-lipped pouty freak, writes some amazing god-tier shit. Tender surrender blows me away. A youtube comment summed the song up as having sex with a guitar; the foreplay, the shagging, the jizzing and then the post-coital cigarette, I agree.

I do like instrumental chill stuff as well.
