This is it precisely for me. The whole sex work is work shit ranks right up there with emotional labor with me. I know I have recommended before here Gavin de Becker's Gift of Fear. It's not a perfect analysis or a perfect book by any means, but it is a book I absolutely recommend people read. Especially women, regrettably. De Becker explains in the book that the "you know someone is fucky but you don't know why" feeling is an instinct that you should always act on and not attempt to rationalise away. His explanation is that there is something in that person's behaviour, or the situation that you are in, that is setting off very basic safety alarms and instincts in your thinking. You might be wrong, but you are probably right that the situation/person at some level is not safe for you. There's something in the (incredibly sophisticated - see how difficult it is to build comparable AI tech) pattern recognition and information processing parts of your brain that is saying "This isn't on the level. Fucking bail".

De Becker's argument is that the skill to know when you need to bail BEFORE you fully understand and can articulate WHY you need to bail is so crucial to our personal safety, on a species wide level, that most of us currently living have a pretty fucking good instinct for it, but the problem is that we rationalise ourselves out of it. His background is personal protection with particular attention to public figures who were being stalked or similarly harassed, so he has long experience with the kind of nutjob fixators like Russhole, particularly in spotting when and how they will escalate. Yeah, it's very strange that people don't realize these types of intuitions are rational. They're just not always articulable in the moment. The brain moves faster than the consciousness sometimes, is all. Like when you close your eyes and turn your head before you're even consciously aware that rouge baseball is flying towards your face.

It's not magic. Thinking that it's magic Pinterest woo or something only women can do because of something to do with the moon or whatever, is a category error. Men don't do it in the same way (that is, developing a very sensitive creep-dar) because they've never learned to do it. It was never critical to their survival. This is actually my pet theory as to why so many trans hookers (and nonhookers, actually) seem to get killed/beat up so much. There are other issues no one cares about right now of course, but one of them has to be that since they didn't grow up as women, they never gathered the data to develop an intuition about dangerous men. Sure, but one of the mysteries about Russ is that he doesn't do this at all. Boyfriends don't matter (and in fact, he'll harass you relentlessly if he thinks you're lying about having one) but husbands do. I'm sure it has a lot to do with his latent Mormonism, but I think he just accepts that excuse as to why the woman won't date him. It's not moral, it's practical -- dating leads to marriage, so if you're married you've finished dating, by definition, and you're of no use to him.

I don't think they have better or stronger intuition; I think they're vulnerable and naive. They can be overly trusting on the one hand, and overly suspicious of ususual-but-totally-harmless behavior on the other hand (they might trust a smiling stranger but freak out over the scary old lady who lives down the block, even if the former turns out the be a pedophile and the latter a harmless widow). But they are sometimes more honest about using the intuition that they have developed at that stage. You're right that this gets trained out of them and they become less effective over time. But little kids just don't have the same dataset to draw on for making decisions -- conscious or not -- that adults do.
