Something's got to give somewhere, and it could be really nasty. One must ask if the Chinese center can hold, and I would say the center holding is problematical.

I sure hope China has a business culture that's not all about lying upwards and sideways for profit and to save face, and cooking the books, because you need accurate numbers to adequately respond to an economic downturn. The Center will make the wrong decisions because the Chinese Center doesn't have a real picture of what's going on. I think a lot depends on whether the great mass of Chinese office workers start losing large amounts of personal wealth. If they do, there goes a lot of the mandate of heaven feeling, which is really nothing more than the Chinese masses' confidence in the central authority.

I'm not expecting it yet, though. A few more big dominos need to fall before this really kicks off. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe the authoritarian structure of their government will help. They have tools available that no Western government would countenance, after all.
