No, I think it’s always been a very popular niche. The pulp books and magazines were big industries for decades. You are simply alive now and noticing popular trends within your lifetime, but they are trends that have been waxing and waning since mass media was invented. Humans and their basic interests haven’t really changed much, just media platforms and the methods of mass communication.
I mentioned this upthread but it's wild none of the people getting mad about "missing white woman" or whatever shit online realize it's because there's so much footage of her available publicly that anyone can watch. There's practically a whole story arc you can follow via their youtube channel, the bodycam footage, etc. There's a lot of casual true crime fans that latched on to this story because the circumstances and set up make it interesting...not so much because she's white. While it sucks all those missing POC are overlooked those cases probably don't come with such a story behind it that anyone can follow along with. It's silly to imply this case isn't at least a little unique.
