Everything is fake and performative for the purposes of making them feel like they are important or that they are in some kind of actual struggle. Since they usually never have dealt with any adversity in their lives and rejected all other forms of meaning (like religion or family) all that remains is this hollow make-believe where they pretend to be the underdog in a world set against them. They are focused on being the 'first' and a 'making a difference' and validating the delusion that their screeching on Twitter means anything.

This makes sense for Twitter troons and the like, but the thing I'm responding to is clearly some well-funded mainstream think tank. "The system" doesn't merely work for them, they are the system.
