It was a joint US/Israel project where Raytheon (a giant US aviation and defense conglomerate) shared technology with Rafael (a company whose last invention before Iron Dome was a missile launching truck in the 2000s). Israel has an Iron Dome, the US doesn't, and we pay them to keep it.
So we have gotten exactly one decade of target practice out of it, for 3.5B a year.

Double post but the weapon used would play a part. If it's a revolver or shotgun the story gets much less traction as those are the weapons to be banned after semi auto rifles.
