I disagree with the idea that conservatism is dead as an idea. Nationalism alone isn't going to save the country if we don't have values that are respectable and held up. That said we have to have a serious talk about what values are worth having in this world. I don't think religion as a concept necessarily works anymore, and I think the idea of conservatism should shift away from religion to more traditional values as well as promoting personal responsibility and integrity. The idea of having restraint to not give into your basic most animalistic instincts and give into the hedonism and consumerism that plagues the world these days. Promoting those last two things alone would fix 90% of America's problems. Nationalism helps a country be secure from without and clearly defined on a map, but it's not going to fix how we define ourselves.
I'm not saying we should or can return to having traditional values and societies like we had before, but we can promote a society that remembers and honors the traditional values of old while not being restrained by them. Holding them up as an idea of how society can be and not something that is inherently evil like progressives would have us believe. I think Trump is a good first step, but I don't he is or ever was going to be the solution. He's the start of an increasingly populistic movement and I think with time populism can get us on the right track. That said time is against us and our odds of ever fixing this mess are slim.
