The question as to whether DID is real is a complex one. Not because it's 'real' in the sense these people have different personalities they can't control but in the sense they choose to behave as if they do and it's common enough to be considered a disorder.

This has been going on for ages, as long as there has been an internet. It's definitely easier to fake in a pseudo-anonymous environment online than in real life. Get called out, get caught, change LiveJournal names, rinse and repeat. It's some middle and high school age shit, mostly, and I think a lot of kids who grow up faking this to abuse their 'friends' or avoid personal responsibility for their behavior grow out of it.

I blame mostly media portrayals for showing a bunch of kids and speds that they can score a get out of jail card for pretending to have a mental illness. Movies like Fight Club and Me, Myself, and Irene and the various adaptations of the book Sybil and probably a bunch of shitty anime have it as central themes. Now the greater cultural environment is so violently opposed to responsibility and recovery that it's not really possible to have a conversation about why people fake mental illness or what kinds of consequences it has. It's not really possible to acknowledge that mental illness fakers exist at all without getting cancelled.

Of course, the Tranchers + Kindness are all painfully, obviously mentally ill. I do think that they are still competent enough to be held responsible for their actions, and faking having an arguably fake disorder is another layer of insulation between themselves and the cold reality that they are unlikable failed adults.
