Part of the problem is dissociation due to chronic abuse is real, and some folks kind of go on autopilot during those events or any kind of event that reminds them of said abuse.


This isn't a separate personality. It's simple your body and brain in preservation mode. However, unscrupulous mental health practitioners stretch this into DID.

Yeah if you've ever interacted with the genuinely disturbed you'll have witnessed what is erroneously getting labelled their child alter fronting or whatever. They'll begin acting like a completely different person because their brain is dumping all its neurotransmitters at once because the neural pathways are fucked from trauma. Imagine the most scared or angry you've ever been, imagine that dialed up to 11 and then imagine things that remind you of that event doing the same thing. Most people don't have that response but if a child experiences something truly awful, they don't have the ability to try and process it in a healthy manner. You'll see lesser versions of this in more healthy people - think a partner who goes mysteriously cold and dead eyed when there's an argument, and becomes intransigent in their beliefs when they're normally so reasonable. Or alternatively going glassy eyed and acting like a Stepford Wife, refusing to discuss anything further because "everything's fine", even though you're mid-argument and the argument clearly isn't resolved. Their brain is replicating its coping mechanism that it learned from when daddy hit mummy because your raised voice has sent the brain the same warning signal. At the disassociative extremes they'll go into a fugue state and not remember anything they've said or done during this time. "Fighting to front" is more accurately described as fighting to stay rational when your endocrine system is telling you to run and hide.

What you don't see is distinct alters with fully formed personalities and identities (let alone alters piloting a body and interacting in the system's headspace like Inside Out), which is a post-hoc rationalisation of an unhealthy mind.

They certainly do not do switch out wigs and makeup differently to play a fun game of "what do my different alters think of strawberries in balsamic vinegar" on Tiktok. That's just flat out larping.
