Let's pretend for one moment that he does die before the election, just for the funsies. What happens then? Will the nomination revert to option number 2, aka Bernie Sanders? There is a vote to end debate that requires 60 votes in most circumstances. In the past you were required to be speaking until the session closed to be considered to be "debating", but sometime that laxed and it basically requires 60 votes in the senate to even consider a bill.
It's an internal senate rule, not a law.
Removing it is shooting yourself in the foot down the road.
