fml Scuttle.. I was just thinking this, or rather as I was just listening through her cover/music playlist again. (Ofc, I am also biased because Towa is up there for me). I think the post of her recent cover (down below in the spoiler for you lazy kiwis) got me really thinking about Towa.I'm gonna numberfag a little bit because honestly I think her accomplishments have flown massively under the radar this last year or so.
Tokoyami Towa was the undisputed 'bottom' of Hololive in sub count in the days leading up to her 3D debut. If I remember correctly, she had about 170K subs, was 40K behind Himemori Luna (210K), and was cursed with a 3D debut slot that overlapped with a huge Nijisanji event that stifled her ability to reach the same live viewer counts as the ones that came before her.
Now, over a year later, Towa hits 820K subs and is now in the same 'bracket' as the likes of Ookami Mio, Murasaki Shion, Tokino Sora, and is clawing back the deficit of the Gen 5 'buff' now that she's within spitting distance of Lamy and Polka (823K and 826K respectively) despite the former once having a 50K sub lead on her.
I don't mean to make this a competition because it isn't, I'm using these numbers to signpost the 'Mother of all Inclines' Towa has enjoyed in 2021. She's undoubtedly been the Dark Horse of this year: hosting multiple MK8 tournaments, participating in all sorts of collabs and consistently making the roster for large APEX competitions, her work ethic has been unbelievable and is worthy of a little limelight.
In my opinion, Towa is the comeback story of Hololive: she does a yabe, almost gets cancelled by deranged gachikois who still believe in the sanctity of idorus (her lying about what happened, that's debatable and something only a proper jury can decide on), returns, carves her own lil corner, and keeps on smashing things out like she's been doing it all her life. She's the example of "What If" had Aloe not decided to graduate (ofc, we will never know if Aloe would've gone off the deep end or if like Towa, manages to weather the storm and set her own course. And I know, I know, Aloe fagging is dumb and autistic but if one purple haired demon could pull through, what's to say the other couldn't?).
If you told me years ago that today I would be willing to shank a fucker for disrespecting this nasally sounding anime demon-angel who when decides to belt it out you wouldn't believe it's the same person (plus a case of voice not matching the facedox), I would've said you need to see a psych and/or reevaluate your life. Now here's some Towa stuff as thanks for coming to my TEDtalk on Towa:
On a side note.. I feel like 4th Gen of Hololive is the Generation of Strife and Perserverance. Think about it (and I may not remember everything shitty that has happened to them):
Kanata: being poor and losing her hearing
Watame: had a shitty father
Towa: she almost got axed by deranged gachis
Luna: well.. she's got shitty stamina but she tries
Coco: bless this shitposting, foulmouthed, bigtiddy orange dragon. We all know her history and if she's not an example of shitty things happening and making the best of it, even silently hard carrying it, idk what is.
And yes, you can argue which generation deserves that title more. Hololive is just a front for Yagoo's Center for the Rehabilitation of Broken/Sad Anime people.
Man, today's one of those days where I just can't keep my mouth shut from sperging out.
