As someone who also has a past in that, I think it's worth mentioning that most people who self-harm have the same problem a lot of people with depression do (since 9 times out of ten self-harming is derivative of depression) - its a cry for help, but their shame keeps them silent. If he hated himself enough to self-harm, he wouldn't have done it somewhere blatant where it'll draw attention. Most people will do it in an easily concealable place, like upper arms, thighs, chest, etc.
