Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp all go down in major outage

How the hell does that work? Who in their right mind uses the same system for cards as everything else? How would the janitorial staff get in if the power failed?
I'm part of a "Technology Committee" for my company to try and stop shit like this. I spent months researching to stop shit like this from happening but it was decided that redundant networks and servers was too expensive for an $80 million company. 6 months ago, no one could get into the corporate office because all the access control software was on the single network server in the building which blew it's PSU overnight.

So this outage has been going for about 9 hours now, so any bets on if this can last 24 hours?
I would love it to be a 24 hour outage. Knowing facebook though the website will be up by the end of the day. I hope it stays gone for longer though, as that would make me so fucking happy.

The possibility of widespread internet shenanigans just adds to my desire of living my cottagecore dreams and moving to the country to homestead. I miss ths decentralized mid 2000s internet.

I only use Facebook for messenger. But I have the phone number of literally anyone that matters to me (not exactly a large number) so it's nbd. I'll just see how it is in a day, or a week.

Very very VERY likely. Most people re-use emails and passwords, and a LOT of websites use Facebook logins to authenticate their own servi...

OH SHIT A LOT OF SITES USE FACEBOOK TO AUTHENTICATE ACCOUNTS. Which they can't do now. So they're dead in the water too.
Yup, Spotify, tidal, most mobile games

Unironically hope this does cause a sort of return to tradition. Social media monopolies like facebook ruin everything great about the internet. Not calling for a complete abolishment social media, just wish everything was a little bit more decentralised.
Absolutely agree. I miss the internet of twenty years ago. I miss blogs, and stupid niche-interest messageboards, and random in-joke Flash animations that used to circulate through webrings, and all the fun, interesting stuff people used to generate before the advent of the Almighty Algorithm.
