I still urge newbie authors who qualify to join - if only because members get better contracts - but there is a reason half the members are in near open revolt against the clique running it... and why dozens of authors who are leaving the organization after having supported it for decades.

ASOIAF/early Game of Thrones was probably the height of popularity in recent years of morally grey SF, but maybe you have a point since that was the Obama years.

FWIW, people have speculated on the forums that Mary is the driving force behind loaning Patrick the money, because she was personally offended by the rude things that were said about her.

They want to push the narrative that the lawsuit is "defending all authors from Nazi trolls" instead of spending member dues to fight Mary's enemies that 99.9% of the SFWA doesn't care about. The only members that get made fun of are the ones in Patrick's twitter clique who bait the trolls ("wow Patrick, I can't imagine how pathetic these incels are, attacking you because they have never once satisfied a woman") and most of them are smart enough to leave it alone when they get pushback.

What's ironic is she's probably never even read In The Black and all the creepy sexual shit Patrick has in the book. He uses "tickling privates" to describe the rapes of a Harvey Weinstein figure. He has an alien eat another alien's dried up cum in the most casual way possible. There's a billionaire who customizes a sex-robot, and every single female crewmember on a spaceship is young, hot, horny, on birth control, and super-desperate for casual sex. This is the book that needs to be protected from any and all negative reviews.
