Sadly, am quite sure it happens in the US military. All the branches of the military are acutely aware of their public images, but perhaps none more so than the Marine Corps. Time and again, in the past, the Marines were looked at for incorporation into the Army. Some have asked why we need two separate ground forces. So the Marines do everything possible to burnish their reputation to help protect against such an amalgamation. Having a very high-profile officer in the brig looks very bad for the Corps.
Having seen some of the statements Scheller has made, I cannot, as a retired senior officer myself, help but think there's something wrong. If I was his commander I'd get him a psych eval, try to get him medically retired to help the family. If I was his Judge Advocate Corps (JAG) or civilian defense lawyer I'd also push for the psych eval.
The LAST thing the USMC wants is for this to go to a general court-martial. (There are three types of court-martials. First is the summary court-martial, for relatively minor offenses, which hands out relatively minor punishments. Next is the special court-martial, for more serious offenses with more serious punishments. Highest is the general court-martial, with at least one general on the court-martial panel [jury], for the most serious offenses, and can levy punishments up to and including the death penalty. Would expect Scheller to face a general court-martial. I never sat on a court-martial but had to know about them.) The publicity would be terrible, and should Scheller be convicted, as is very, very likely, the USMC will have created a martyr, with a vocal group of supporters. Even more, long-running, bad publicity for the Corps. Am sure there would be Congressmen and Senators questioning the Commandant of the Marine Corps about the whole thing. Also possible that angry Congressmen and Senators could take out that anger on the Marines via the budget process. Less money for the Marines. If you don't think the upper echelons of the USMC aren't already playing this scenario in their heads, rest assured, they are.
Suggest if Scheller would agree to go quietly all would be forgiven and he retires due to PTSD. But I tend to doubt that, so get ready to watch a real clusterfuck. Gonna be nasty all around, sports fans. Guaranteed.
