Nexpo/YT Horror Channels - Do they all suck

I found Local58 around 2 or 3 years ago and found it genuinely entertaining only to come back and find an entire genre of "analog horror" like it has sprouted out of nowhere, but holy shit it's bad. Maybe I'm just getting old and cynical but seeing stuff like the Mandela Catalogue makes me want to gouge my eyes out just cringing at the total and complete lack of subtlety, missing what made people like Local58 in the first place.

Really? Mind explaining what exactly about the Mandela Catalogue you dislike? The lack of subtlety is something I can understand. As someone who has a fear of the uncanny valley and things of that nature, I found the fact it didn't hide the horror and put it out on display even scarier, but as I said, it's only because I find the topic itself to be scary. The fact I watched it at home alone during a rainstorm didn't help much either. I suppose I just want to see your thoughts on it.

I get why people would be unsettled, again I'm guessing it's just cynicism on my end.
The biggest criticism I would have would be how nonsensical a lot of the plot elements are for a genre that's seemingly founded on being as immersive and uncanny valley as possible. Maybe it's a bit of a nitpick but using TTS was a big blunder for tapes supposedly from the '90s or early oughts, and just makes no sense given the voicing of later parts. Also, the dialogue being burnt onto the VHS tapes and flashing on screen makes no sense and really takes you away from it.
MC specifically seems to really love the "creepy face with sudden unsettling noise" thing because they do it like 7 times across the 4 videos. I guess I can get doing it once but more than that (especially when you can practically see it coming) is excessive.
It just seems like from what I've skimmed (MC and The Walten Files) there seems to be a certain energy/feeling they're missing from L58. Maybe it's a high bar to set but I feel like it's missing the point so much I felt a little frustrated.

I see. I have a few points to ask you about. Again, not trying to say you should love it, just want to nitpick your thought process.

I agree that they should not have used a modern sounding TTS bot. I would have preffered one that sounded less realistic, such as this one

I hate shit like that, but I think you may be confusing ARG's. I can't recall any times where it has done that. Correct me if I am wrong since I'm going by memory, but if hungover memory serves right, the fact that it didn't use loud jumpscares and instead used ambiance and silence to get points across was what made me like it.

There is no doubt that Local 58 set a high bar. The key to analog horror is to find an arg that covers a topic that scares you. For example, L58, the monster was the moon (or so we are lead to believe), in MC the monsters were human lookalikes, in Eventide Media Center the bombs were the monsters, et cetera.

Still, I can see where you're coming from, it's not everyone's cup of tea.

A little bit of both, it looks like. Skimming through the Christian VHS and Vol. 1 it looks like there's a mix of both silence, static and noise. I guess my point is more that the whole face thing isn't very subtle and I've noticed it in a couple other analog horror series.

Oh, for sure. Honestly it's probably L58 setting the bar that made me dislike these series in the first place. They look like amateur projects and they're certainly better than anything I could make, so I'm not trying to really attack a creator just for putting in earnest effort in a world sick with irony poisoning. Just wish people would be a little more honest and forthcoming with constructive criticism.

Oh the face thing isn't subtle at all. infact a gripe I had was showing what the alternates looked like. I would have preffered to leave it to my imagination, or stick with those stick figure silhouettes instead of the photoshopped people.

Criticism is what makes any project go up a level, okay to good, good to great, great to legendary, et cetera. Infact I like that the creator stopped making community posts out of character due to fan suggestions, since it broke the illusion for me. But these projects do have an armature nature to them, especially some of the ones I had watched that had under 10k views. Just some kid with Photoshop, Vegas Pro 17, and a TTS bot. It's hard to find quality ones due to market oversaturation.

Wendigoon is kind of a breath of fresh air. A lot of horror channels with that many views overproduce their content to look like something you'd find on ID and they develop an air of pretentiousness. He's more like a friend telling you about something creepy and comes off as genuine, and that flesh pit video he did was one of my favorites. And yeah, timestamping your sponsorship segments is very admirable.
What a wonderful way to start this morning.
Slightly late on flesh pit talk, but TES' video was just him reading the disaster report without any commentary, so keep that in mind if you're diving into this without any knowledge whatsoever.
If you're intrigued by the Mystery Flesh Pit, Wendigoon's video is a better place to start, then you can move on to listening to TES' reading of the disaster report if you can't be arsed to read it yourself. The way Wendigoon's video is structured helps you understand the timeline of this entire thing without having to sift through the various documents yourself, which aren't in chronological order.

I haven't seen many YouTubers talk about it, so I'm glad it's getting more widespread attention. There's even a fanmade "book" on it, which I haven't finished yet but so far it's looking promising. It's been confirmed as canon by the creator, so I wouldn't be surprised if people add some content from it to their videos in the future. I recommend it to anyone who wants to know more about how the disaster was for people inside and around the pit, as the disaster report is very impersonal.

my friend keep me up till 5 am ranting about this video, while the Spongebob guy has good production value, his work its filled with cliches and very on the nose messages that have been made before and in a better and clever ways by Alan Resnick, its entire concept its a bandwagon clickbait that followed the Skin theory video, and as it seems he rush the idea to the ground very fast by involving the ARG and the "i dont want to do this" by the 3rd video, also the direct involment with Inside a Mind, made me think that the interest on the ARG shit was minimal and he wanted people to not necesarily notice it but to give a shit about it, how many millions of people watch the spongebob videos because theyre generic clickbait shit?, how many of those give a rat ass about a shitty tacked on ARG? i bet less than 100k if being generous.
And to make it worse the ARG falls flat when you take into consideration the big menace its... a cow, a mutant cow.

Ngl the Lake Nyos video was great, and about a topic not often covered.

Plagued Nonce has videos of him in a 5$ aliexpress maido cosplay on his tiktok and I feel dirty looking at it. That and his "I'll give away free money to my patreon subs" thing is v. sketchy. Also against patreon TOS bc you can't have raffles via patreon.

There really is something weird with this ARG.
While I personally find the concept behind it interesting (the manipulative creature that gives fame at the cost of your dreams part), it feels incredibly disconnected, as if the mutant cow is meant to be a red herring.
But there is nothing that foreshadows it being fake as far as I have seen, and I'm pretty sure the creator is actually competent at making ARGs since he has done one before that was pretty good, so I can only wonder if there's going to be something in the next video.
And, well, he made me insterested in his ARG, so I guess he did a good job?

To be fair the creator's args are kind of like shitpost args and he doesn't take himself super seriously especially with how weird his pizza arg was.

He's also competent at making horror given some of his horror shorts so he's competent in comparison to other arg creators.
