In 1981 the Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization (PATCO), a union with 13,000 air traffic controllers as members, went on strike. What did Reagan do? He fired 12,000 of them, and replaced them with other ATCs, miscellaneous airport personnel (some of who weren't qualified) and soldiers. It wasn't pretty but it did work.

The addition of pilots is what makes this unique, yes. At the end of the day though, pilot strikes could disrupt travel heavily but it probably wouldn't hurt the affected companies financially - we have been bailing them out a lot throughout COVID and nothing indicates we're gonna stop. Only way I can see a change in policy happening is if this spread to most if not all the other airlines and it started shutting down air travel entirely.

The discourse about the unvaccinated being threats to other people seems bizarre now that we know that the new vaccines don't do much to prevent the transmission of the virus. Unvaccinated status mostly means that the unvaccinated person is more likely to get seriously ill, which is an issue for hospital bed availability, but not much of an issue for whether you can catch the virus from them unless they're symptomatic and breathing/expectorating more than usual.

I'm a bit surprised too. I expected one of the legacy carriers to have this problem first. Delta, United, and American were all very vocal and supportive of BLM during the BLM riots so I kinda expected them to do the same with covid vaccine mandates cause that's being on the "right side of history."

United's vaccination deadline has passed. They're outprocessing 593 employees. Scuttlebutt on Flyertalk says a few hundred uploaded their records late and the total terminated will be 232/67,000.

American has a mandate but I'm not sure how far along they are. Delta, last I heard, is simply increasing the cost of health insurance for the unvaccinated by $200/mo. That won't actually make anyone safer or reduce the time they're out sick, but ECMO is expensive, someone has to pay for it. Apparently 84% decided they'd rather get vaccinated, which is better than the national average but not really great.
