99.8% of fecal-oral transmitted diseases are survivable, and the survival rate is even higher if you are under 50. Even so, I'm not against anyone washing their hands if they want to. My parents wash their hands, because they are elderly and at greater risk. I just don't think there should be government or employer mandates to wash hands. Hand-washing is a private decision and it's none of their business. Furthermore, the triclosan in soap will create pressure for a hand-washing-resistant variant of fecal-oral transmitted disease. So you see, the people who wash their hands are the real problem.

Start with this paper on PubMed, then maybe this PLOS ONE article will give you more to think about. And while I hate to cite wiki, this article actually provides a lot of useful background information. I think once you understand the biases inherent in your own perceptual lens, you'll have a better understanding of the hand-washing thing.
