Does anyone know what this is broadly called? I want to read some academic work on it but cant work out what area of academia it would be (psychology? sociology? anthropology? veterinary medicine?) And im not sure what search terms to use that dont result in either bastardised academia or raging identity politics articles where left and right fight to gotcha the otherside.

I just want to make it make sense. Why have we allowed suffering to become something that can be opted in and out of? Has anyone considered that by not gatekeeping we are allowing suffering to be redefined by those suffering the least to the detriment of genuine sufferers that we claim to care about.

I basically want red pill academia. Any ideas?

Yeah there might be some more generalized stuff in psychology, but nobody seems to have the balls to really attack the pathology of online identity politics in academic work. Twitter mobs can just kill an academic's career if they want to, because the institutions either cave (for whatever reason) or are already captured ideologically. Higher education has really become a service industry. Same thing goes for journalists and authors, unless they want to go all-in on substack.

If not you can always search on google scholar "consumerism+ identity formation+ historicize" to find something that speaks to you. But essentially, it's because of american consumerism and individualism being globalized. It's all just social commodity fetishism which reduces subjective human life as just another experience you can buy, collect, and claim as your own just because you paid money for it
