You joke but this is basically the case with smart meters. Government-contracted power monopolies demand people switch to unreliable Internet of Things enabled electric meters. There are no benefits for homeowners over a traditional analog or digital meter but installation is compulsory in many locations if you want to be connected to the grid.
IoT devices can easily get fucked with if the company is negligent with security (and they almost always are). You're exposing customers to more liability for zero benefit.
