For those of you unfamiliar with Paradox Interactive games, Hearts of Iron IV (HOI4) is a wargame where you control a nation & its army during World War II. There's a large community based around alternate history mods, most notably being "Kaiserreich: What if Germany won World War I?" Unsurprisingly, it's overrun by autistic high school boys and all that it entails: an ideological divide between anarcho-troons and neo-fascists, sperging out over any change to the gameplay or lore, driving unfunny memes into the ground, and desperately thirsting over any woman under 60 featured in the game.

One such woman is Princess Victoria Louise of Prussia, AKA the daughter of Wilhelm II, last German Kaiser. One special target of their collective lust is this one of her in a military uniform from when she was 17. The thirst for a century-old photo of a teenager was so strong that the actual Paradox devs added an easter egg path into the game where she could become leader of Germany. It's not surprising that an autist would eventually troon out over her.

I agree that transbianism does involve autogynephilia to one extent or another, but I am more and more attached to the idea of seeing it as a long-term dissociative state as well (not that these rule each other out). That twitter thread where the author compared being misgendered to a heroin addict getting Narcan and instantly losing the narcotic high was very fitting.

I think both AGPs and Aidens are to some extent using a pre-existing sexual interest or fetish as a way to dissociate and mentally escape from themselves and whatever past trauma and/or current problems they have, which is why misgendering, or anything else that interrupts the dissociation, can be experienced as genuine trauma (note: I am not taking the troon side on misgendering here; it is not society's responsibility to validate people's dissociative states at all costs).

A lot of people have fetishes or weird sexual interests, but if you interrupt their elaborate sexual fantasy they'll just be annoyed; they won't experience it as such a negative event that they become suicidal or full of narc rage. This is not just a fetish or even a fetish + narcissism, it's a fetish + (sometimes) narcissism + an extreme form of maladaptive daydreaming that is protecting these people from their own pain.

It especially fits when you look at how many troons emerge or are groomed from online spaces dedicated to elaborately imagined escapist fantasy worlds, like fandom, RPGs, gaming, etc. These are already people that are spending a lot of time and effort escaping from reality.
