1. She's a treehugger who wanted to do a story about an infertility crisis caused by pollutions

2. She wanted to do a story that was inspired by the Iranian Revolution which saw womens rights in Iran wiped out and women turned into second class citizens under a theocracy.

She ended up replacing all references to Islam and Muslims to Christianity and Fundie Christians due to her A not wanting to become a pariah amongst her left leaning friends in the literary world and B. because bashing Fundies would give the book a bigger reach with readers.

That said, while it's long been promoted that the book was also anti-second wave anti-porn feminist, it's something that has long been over-exagerated. At best,. the book implies that the anti-porn, TERFs were treated as the version of a "broke clock is alway right once per day" thing by folks like Aunt Lydia. That they had right ideas but let all of their other feminist views distract them from the few "good" things they were about.
