@NoReturn finally made me get up the nerve to make this thread and @Kari Kamiya gave me the idea, but this is an anime thread made just for girls and your girly anime, manga, and light novels that you read/watch.

First of all, what is your favorite girly anime you grew up with? For me it would probably be Tokyo Mew Mew. I would wake up bright and early ever Saturday to tune in to see the dub Mew Mew Power. I later found the subs of the series as well as got all the manga including the sequel A la Mode and realized that it was much better than the dub though the dub did hold a special place in my heart and the theme was pretty catch and very early-mid 2000s

When I heard that there was going to be a remake of Tokyo Mew Mew coming out next year, I was quite ecstatic because that is basically my childhood. The costumes of the girls look nice, though I don't like that Pudding has a dress as opposed to a jumpsuit now, it makes he outfit look too similar to Mint's.

You will never be a woman. Cope, sneed and dilate.

Your average anime troon

Not sure if I'm allow in here since I'm a grown ass heterosexual man, but... I fucking love chick anime.

As previously mentioned, Card Captor Sakura is the magnum opus. And the recent sequel anime was surprisingly good.

Magic Knight Rayearth is an earlier work by the same group. I haven't seen the whole thing, but I liked what I saw.

Personally I couldn't really get into Tokyo Mew Mew. I watched it, but it seemed pretty average at best. Nothing all that interesting or original.

Princess Tutu is excellent. Superficially, it's about a girl who ballet battles people to fix their broken emotions, but it has a surprising amount of depth. "For those who accept their fate, happiness. For those who defy it, glory."

I only saw the first couple season of Pretty Cure, but it was a'ight. No idea about the later ones.

I don't know if Ouran is considered strictly a chick anime, since it's an over the top parody of shoujo, but it's pretty damn good.

I've probably got more but that's enough to get started.

Cardcaptor Sakura is the Godfather 2 of magical girl shows.

For some reason I couldn't get into Cardcaptor Sakura at all, I don't know why, but I just couldn't get into it which is weird.

I have seen Pretty Cure up until I think the ninth season Smile! Pretty Cure then I stopped paying attention. What is unique about the series is that the girls don't always rely on magic (though even that sort of depends on the season) and I noticed they tend to do a lot more fighting and more action than more magic girl series. Geez, I can't believe it is on its 18th season.

... does Madoka count as girly anime? I'm honestly not sure.
It is considered a deconstruction of magical girl anime so maybe?

Also, yeah, I didn't bother watching the final season of Shugo Chara tbh

Also, if you don't know from my avatar, I love 80s magical girl anime (my avatar is literally Minky Momo before she infamously gets hit by the truck). I don't know which one is my favorite. I do love Creamy Mami, it is kind of like a Japanese version of Jem and the holograms. I also like Persia, Fancy Lala and Angel Mint. I have seen only bits and pieces of Pastel Yumi though.

Continue not watching it. There's nothing worthwhile in it, except for a single moment in the final episode if you're on Team Tadase (as all good God fearing Americans should be). Which is nice but totally not worth it.

To quote from the wedding thread:
We should seriously have a girly anime thread for the beauty parlor where we can sperg about anime without having it shit up by dudes sperging about their big titty monster girl isekai series and shit.
But muh big-tiddied magical girls.

Anyhoo, I'm a sucker for girly anime, but I've noticed shoujo isn't really a big thing anymore when it's not a magical girl series, especially as shoujo anime typically would run 50-plus episodes. I love Cardcaptor Salura to death as a childhood favorite of mine, but gimme my sappy romances like Blue Spring Ride, Wolf Girl & Black Prince, and Lovely★Complex. Although when it comes to shoujo romances, My Love Story!! is just super special and it's up there with CLANNAD and Fruits Basket as one of my favorite romances. (CLANNAD is a seinen, but it has a huge female following, so let's count it.) It also further cemented my love for the huge guy, tiny girl dynamic that has been increasing in number and it makes me happy.

Although speaking of Fruits Basket, I'm still mad they dropped the ball with the final season fucking with the pacing like that. The first season is literally what the 2001 anime went through (and the 2001 anime has better comedic timing, if you ask me), but the second season was bloody amazing, it destroyed me. The manga has sentimental value to me, it was the first manga I ever owned (that I knew was manga, Pokémon Adventures was released in comic book issue format at first). I was honestly mad they cut out the flashback of Tohru's parents, but they're releasing it as a separate special from the sounds of it next year, so at least there's that. I don't know if that will get dubbed, though, but given FUNimation's current track record with their dubs, I dread what they'll do to it, too. Leave Kyoko and Katsuya alone, you monsters! ಥ﹏ಥ

Actually now that I think about it, does anyone have a favorite kiss from an anime (shoujo or otherwise)? This one was super sexy and real surprising. (Time-stamped, but for reals y'all, watch Snow White with the Red Hair.)

When I heard that there was going to be a remake of Tokyo Mew Mew coming out next year, I was quite ecstatic because that is basically my childhood. I hate the new costume designs, it's way too frilly for my taste, but it also looks too PreCure-inspired for me, too. The Mew Mews were unique in how their costumes differed from each other while still keeping to a theme, but giving them all bell-shaped dresses that don't look mobile to move in is so fucking dumb. I dread how Quiche is going to look like now.

... does Madoka count as girly anime? I'm honestly not sure.
No. It aired at like 1:30 in the morning, meaning it was clearly made for otaku, which are generally men. It's girly-looking in nature as a magical girl series, but it wasn't made for girls. Also brought about the dark magical girl "deconstruction" which I'm just sick and tired of now.

Nana by Ai Yazawa is a great series that was sadly never finished. Lots of boy drama, no yuri but a very "romantic friendship" which is a social concept in Japan that i find really relatable and sweet. It used to run in Shoujo Beat in America.

Peach Girl is another one i read in early high school. I like the ones that read like soap operas.

I'm glad somebody made this! I tried making a Webtoons thread but it got moved to Multimedia and died. My experience with webtoons are mostly girly ones so I thought others here might be interested in them as well.

My favorite girly manga are Nana, Skip Beat, and the Sailor Moon manga. Cat Street and Paradise Kiss are great as well.

For webtoons I really like Lore Olympus (I know), I'm the grim reaper (not really "girly", but it does have a romance) and See you in my 19th life. True Beauty is good for awhile but it gets repetitive.

Yeah, I noticed that too. I mean, the biggest genre now is the isekai. I really hate that because I feel like the golden age of shoujo is behind us.

Speaking of which, anyone have any female-centric isekai recommendations? Most of them all seem to be thinly veiled male power fantasies and if it wasn't for all of the harem shit and borderline porn, I would have liked the genre being the idea of being transported into a fantasy world to explore is pretty awesome.

Thank you! Hard to find anywhere to talk about this stuff. Most women I've met who also like manga still never really read many series' aimed at women.

I also grew up with Tokyo Mew Mew, but I only ever saw the anime version one time and didn't like how much it changed from the manga. I have kept all my TMM volumes and never intend to get rid of them.

However; the first manga I actually read was KARE KANO: His and Her Circumstances. Later on I collected the whole series since when I was younger we could only ever read whatever volume happened to be at the bookstore. (Volume 1 of Tokyo Mew Mew was the 2nd to last volume I read of the series for this reason.)
karekano.jpg
The anime for Kare Kano is good for most of it but it starts to cut the drama in favor of comedy and by the end the studio ran out of money so it drops off around volume 7 of the manga.

When OneManga and MangaFox were up and running I read dozens of shojo series. Some that stick out in my memory are:
  • Skip Beat! (yep, it's still running and I hope Nakamura doesn't die before finishing it)
  • Tail of the Moon
  • Stepping on Roses
  • Absolute Boyfriend
  • Nana
  • Vampire Knight (never completed reading it though)
  • Paradise Kiss
Recently I've been reading The Demon Prince of Momochi House (rec. if you like Japanese mythology) and My Love Mix Up! (rec. if you like comedy and light BL.)

I also tend to like Touhou manga. The fandom for Touhou is...awful and I don't like most of the character designs, but series like Lotus Eaters and Forbidden Scrollery are pretty good. Just don't touch the fanbase, they're basically all coomers.

Cat Street was so cute! And Kare Kano too!

InuYasha and Vision of Escaflowne are the big ones, with Fushigi Yuugi and Magic Knight Rayearth close behind. Every other isekai I think is more for the male audience even if the cast is full of girls (Show by Rock!), but El Hazard had a decent romance. But I dunno, I don't mind isekai, but modern isekai is pretty bland.
