Also the book was published in 1985 so not much knowledge cultural or otherwise of trans people.

Oof, thinking about it, it'd either be samey as fuck but with different flavors of trans (black, white, poor, rich, in europe, in america, in asia, in a fucking lost african tribe...) or absolute nonsense with trans stuff shoehorned in. Maybe a better show will get partially infected to shoehorn the trans issues with a token or two.
There's no really good outcome from this, specially when both the writers and the audience who want that material are fucking nuts.
There's potential for a story based on trans issues, but you have witnessed their way of thinking in this thread. I expect the stuff to be absolute garbage only aided by pressure to give good reviews or else. Without that pressure it'll be stuff nobody will hear about and forever forgotten by time.

About 3 things come to mind:

1. The stuff published on Webtoons and Itch.io from troons, so that but more money.
2. The same thing pumped out by other netflix genres but erase a few words and add "trans" and "trans rrights" here and there. Generic but harmless. Netflix is too lazy to take a risk beyond "heyoo I am a girldick" once an episode.

Been meaning to post these for a while, but one of the top nonbinaries, Noelle Stevenson (an actual female, but one who could easily pass for a TiM) has a comic called Lumberjanes about a girlscout troop or something, I don't know, I haven't read it. In this troop they have a troon named Jo. Now, the basic premise is funny enough, but some highlights from the article

Jo is tall and thin, with a strong nose and chin.

In other words, he looks like a male

Jo is the most cool-headed and analytical member of the group. She is a transgender girl who has two gay fathers. She acts as the de facto leader and specializes in the more mathematical puzzles the group faces

So the strong group of girlz has a male leader who handles all the math ("math is hard, let's go shopping!").

But as funny as the article itself is, there's some high-quality klim in the comments. Most of it is just standard handmaidenry about how "pretty" he is or how happy they are to see a tranny in the group, but I really liked this whole exchange.
