Realistically this is what occurs.
Dems and progressives can't stand the right so much that they finally call it splitsville and secede. The map is based more on geography as outside the Northeast most of the country falls into the spheres of influence of the Redland. Red state America decides to form a new government it's called the federation of american states and it uses a flag similar to the Betsy Ross design meets the Russian federation flag.
America is split into two areas.
> Federation of American states - like the Russian federation but near absolutism on free speech and gun laws. Alaska joins gets almost universal autonomy
> People's republic of Americans - think the Pacific northwest and northeast going full communist. Hawaii joins but regrets it's military rule.
5 years the people's republic is at it's height their progressive tax code and policies make them the cause celebre. Financial times write essays on how they made socialism for the 21st century. Despite initial successes it begins to collapse within 15 years. Once an economic powerhouse the people's republic begins to look more like Venezuela as food shortages exist for everything and despite having the land and people to feed themselves they rely on food imports. The country is now descending into rioting and. Medium intensity gurriella warfare.
The federation of american states.
Gets economically screwed at first. Their country is considered a pariah by most Western EU nations for almost a decade. After some financial workarounds the country attracts foreign investment. The deep south once an area of poverty now begins to see an economic boom. Sensible immigration policies and low costs of living make the county both affordable and give the citizenry a high purchasing power. After 20 years the average FAS citizen has tripple the purchasing power as an average PRA citizen. Jobs are plentiful and business is booming. Begins to grow strong foreign relations with independent countries. Japan, Brazil, Columbia, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Mexico and Ghana become the top trading partner's. Violent crime also is down to lows not seen since the 1950s. Society trust has grown and schools now teach religious teachings as well as secular teachings to make students well versed at understanding the world.
