He already quit comedy the first time because he was offended that he thought his White crew was laughing "the wrong way" at his jokes. He said so in a Letterman interview. As much as people enjoy his comedy he's definitely the kind of person who would quit if he thought the "wrong people" enjoyed what he did.

i think dave had some kind of moment of introspection. maybe him shitting on black people so hard was eating at his subconcious and that laugh pushed him to the edge.

IIRC, that was part of it. But there was a comedy special where he talked about being hauled into Comedy Central's HR department for telling a gay joke and when he asked why the gay jokes were off limits but the nigger jokes were fine, they told him "It's because you're not gay."
