The entire Chandler family seems like the biggest bunch of worthless subhuman leech assholes without considering anyone except themselves. Chris, Bob, and Barb all leeched off of welfare, social security, etc., for so many fucking years. Chris had 22 years of getting ~1300 a month in welfare without working except for his couple of weeks part-time at Wendy's before he got fired.

Bob and Barb both had careers. Bob was a veteran and worked as an engineer for 40 years. Barb was an accountant. Two of Bob's children have doctorate degrees.

This exactly. There's a huge difference between people who need/use welfare and people who scam welfare. Barb legitimately had mental problems after working a long career, and Bob earned his VA benefits for sure. They use their welfare benefits and they earned them. As for Chris, while he did misuse his welfare checks, he was still disabled. he never faked anything or received benefits under false pretenses.

Welfare scammers are the people you see in the grocery store using their $1,000 SNAP benefits (that they got by paying $50 to make sure their 9 kids get diagnosed with ""adhd"") to buy crab legs and margarita mixers and sugar cereal w/ their obese children in tow begging for a vegetable.

chris' disability is autism. for a normal person you don't really think about how your social skills impact your life, but the fact is chris simply does not have the brainpower or social skills to perform well in any type of work environment. at least you're getting OT. During my time in foodservice getting OT was like pulling teeth. (And then getting PAID for your OT was like getting them put back in.... with a hammer.)

You don't have to pay in anything to get disability though. you can get SSDI from using family's work credits (as you mentioned) but you can also just get regular ol' SSI if you're blind or have another significant disability. Enough people pay into SS and don't get to use it that they're able to then use those funds for disabled/blind/old people who never worked a day in their lives.

Even if you DID have to work to get disability, Chris could've likely still claimed SNAP and TANF for a long time.

I use to work in a starbucks in a grocery store. The store took foodstamps so, in turn, so did we since we were using the store's system. No shit, people would use their foodstamps to buy a Frappuccino for themselves and their little shits while I'm working and starving. I fucking hate this country's system sometimes.

In the UK we don't have food stamps but I'm always shocked when I see people who are benefit lifers for no other reason than doesn't want to work spending huge sums of money from Budgeting loans on things like TV's and Games consoles or their monthly payout on luxury's first and necessities second or third.

I'm glad we have a social safety net and provisions for people who can't work for various reasons and the number of people outright abuse of the system is negligible in the numbers, but it's still no less grating especially when you see people who have never worked for no good reason living high on the hog when there are direct neighbours who are working full time jobs have a worse lifestyle than they do. I donate to my local food bank when I am able to and I am sure that some of my donations have gone to people who have spent there money on things they don't need like Games etc but there are a lot of people it's gone to help that do need it especially since Covid started as a lot of elderly and single parent families have been made redundant through no fault of there own so I'd rather do something to help than not but when you see a 25 year old chav pot mong drinking Wife beater in the park and a 20 pack of fags rolling a spliff it does make you think twice about continuing to do so.

Sorry for the off topic but it's something I've been thinking about lately with some things that have been in the news, and I am really sorry your in that situation working and starving shouldnt be in the same sentence.

To be fair, Bob was level headed. But then he met Barb and the rest is Christory. It's no surprise that Chris inherited a lot of his behavior from his mom. This is the same woman who kept a neighbor's dog after it went lost and did not want to return it to its owner. Chris himself thought there was nothing wrong and questioned why they had to give the dog, that wasn't theirs, back. Despite what was done to her recently, Barb is that one negative influence in Chris' life and the least popular character in this series that is Chris' life.

Chris' issues are entirely on Barb. The worst thing you can say about Bob is that he was resistant to getting Chris professional help but thats explainable in 2 ways; Bob was intelligent and he would have observed growing up US mental institutions and he would know they were hell holes before getting shutdown. He likely applied that to all professional mental health facilities. Secondly when Chris was a kid school systems loved to slap learning disabilities on children for federal and state tard bux, with Bob's already previous prejudices it would be easy for him to think Chris would wind up like all those other mental health patients that were released after the government mental health shutdown.
I'm sure he probably grew to regret the decision but by that point he had retirement and barb's mental health to worry about.

It was a big thing in the English speaking world to find ill behaved, and other kids talk to them for a little bit and then slap "Autisim" onto them as a diagnosis and use that for more funding or "Classroom enhancements" for said kids that didn't have that issue or had another issue that went untreated as a result, Autisim was the most commonly known learning disability at the time but the help very rarely made it to the kids and it got spread around to fill in other gaps in funding and that was really unfair to those kids as it caused them problems throughout school such as sticking them in lower achieving classes because they where viewed as incapable and cutting them off from other resources.

yep. i once got a measly $137 in stamps and i used them like the most precious resource in the world. then the state i was living in legitimately demanded i pay them all back because they 'miscalculated'.

meanwhile the subway i worked in took stamps and people would get fucking 5 footlong sandwiches full of shit while i was praying for enough tips to pay for my employee meal. absolutely burnt me up every time.

There have been efforts to do it but it's harder than most people think, but I'm not so sure it should be done or at least fully.

I'd rather people get a Shopping card that can only be used for food and then that's strictly enforced with a list of foods that they can buy and a nono list of things like Tobbaco and Alcohol and then a cash deposit for incidental things and a issued bus / rail pass if they are reliant on public transport, that way you're not penalising the real job seeker and your not subsidising layabouts. But even then I can see how that system would be gamed so there is no way of balancing it fully, so we're left with a bit of a shit sandwich however we try and splice it.

I honestly think we need some form of change to the benefits system but what that change should be and how it should be executed is something I am far and a way unqualified to do, but one thing I think would help is jobs availability that pay a decent wage and access to real job training not some Mickey Mouse "job skill's" course where they tart up yoiur CV for the 10th time and send you on lessons about how to look for work but real skills that get you into a job like proficiency with Office Software to a legitimate standard, and then vocational skills courses in real skill's that will land you a job so if you have a intrest in Building trades you go on a 6 month training course that teams up with building companies who can recruit for jobs from there, etc.

As I said im unqualified to say what should be done so take that with a grain of salt but I can't help think that Job's and Education need to change for it to improve the benefits system and life in general.

Says a lot about school systems that try to classify children for funding as opposed to identifying issues and working with the child and being able to say "we returned this child to their peer group and they are performing in normal classes."

That was probably the main goal of Chris they had as they grew older; him taking care of them. I can't see any evidence they encouraged him to say, move out and start a life, so I'm assuming that Borb was looking at Chris like Bob's other kids, except they were sure to make him unable to walk out on them. We know Barb had a lot of men walk out on her life.

The school district fiasco probably really colored both of them to Chris's treatment by ignorant people, going back to the scary nut house myth they both believed. So when PVCC came around, Wendys, Game Place, I believe they saw that honestly as just an extension of discrimination of when Chris was younger. Getting Chris setup on welfare was probably the only way Chris was ever going to get any regular money in their eyes.

I really don't think at any time they actually believed anything that happened to Chris was his fault and that if Chris was put in an institution, then he might never get out again to "take care of them". I doubt they even believed Chris was doing anything weird or bad until the tranny shit came down.
