I read the actual study on it and it doesn't mention anything about choosing the sex. That did however lead me to another paper with a hypothesis from some Indian I think which read like some psychobabble.

I want to pester her enough to lie more about her male and female pit bulls. It’s the best thing for months. There was no response after requesting proof of life. I think they may have run into the bear traps she has haphazardly placed on the lawn and met a horrible demise. Call PETA. While they’re at it I’m sure PETA would also take in her other 6 mongrels after CPS determined their intellect wasn’t high enough to be considered human.
