Re: the style they're trying (badly) to emulate:
I think it's this one:
Nippon Animation had a very popular series called "World Masterpiece Theater", featuring classic stories for kids and youngsters: Little Women, Sound of Music, Heidi (the most popular), Peter Pan, etc. I don't know enough of Nippon An., but a quick search shows they don't use this style for their current projects that much, which are more diverse in form and content. There are more studios using it, I suppose, the most popular being Ghibli (the faces, at least), but more modern-looking, of course. And, for some reason, whoever teach in Calarts seem to think all anime look like this or something, because there is no way you convince me that the bean mouth isn't taken from this, albeit badly:
Thing is, this specific type of design fits stories that are kid-oriented. The characters look amiable and even innocent and childish, which is the purpose of it. And it's not just a product of the time, because around those years, we also had Cobra having sex scenes and it looked like this:
20 years later, anime has evolved and not all studies doing work for children have that chubby-cute style, but whenever it is, you can tell the audience is PG.
Now, check this aberration and tell me which style they are trying to emulate here:
...because these type of stories, that are more targeted for young teenage girl rather than little girls, are meant to look like this:
Unless, of course, the real purpose of this is to attract little kids with the purpose of grooming them. Oh, boy.

Yes, and it's funny that they basically used CR as their own personal Indiegogo to get the funding for it.I’m fairly certain the majority of characters in this are self inserts.
