This is something I've been thinking about for a while. What seperates the content creator from the lolcow?
I think I've cracked it. It's how they respond to criticism. A regular content creator is fundmantally humble, and questions the quality of their content. When criticism is given, they take it onboard to an extent, or they note it but disregard it.It is still treated with respect, and it is acknowleged as someone criticising the work, with the hope of improving the output.
When a lolcow is criticised, the critic is evil, The work is fantastic, regardless of it's actual quality. They only seek praise, fame and money. Best example here is sonichu, a comic looking like it was drawn by a child and with a plot written by one. The work is good, so those that criticise it are either icapable of understanding why it is good, or they know it's goodness and seek to tear it down. Either way, there is little capability for improvement.
Let's apply our model to the Escapist 4, as I (and only I) call them. Yahtzee Croshaw, Moviebob, Jim Sterling and Loading Ready Run. All 4 were employed by the Escapist at it's peak from 2012-2015. And they've taken radically different careerpaths since.
Yahtzee is still employed by the escapist, and single handedly carried that site with Zero punctuation for a few years. Arguably, he still does. But aside from that, he has written several novels, published several games, started a youtube show with his buddy Gabe, been consulted for writing for large games ,Watchdogs legion being the biggest. He is undoubtedly the most sucessful of the 4. His atute to criticism is also well known, he even did a multi part poem about it, which is amazingly contrasted with Jims slop alongside it. Heres a link, the keretic is the poems you're after but again, the contrast is great.

Loading Ready Run has done quite well. They managed to turn a sketch about MTG into being one of the larger sponsored content creators. They youtube channel hosts sketch comedy, a sort of sitcom thing, a news show, a panel show, and many other previous projects.Theres also a Twitch channel with shitloads of content, a monthly live show, a dozen podcasts, some of them have their own twitch channels, and Graham is well known for monetizing anything he can by pointing a camera at it. Theres a wide variety of content and it's pretty good. Their attitude to criticism is to take it on board. They're pretty nervous about their success, theres a lot of questioning and worry that they could be better. And theres been a notable improvement in quality over the years as their acting and technical skill has improved.
Jim we all know. It's why we're in this thread. Criticism is always evil, unless it's him and his pals criticising capitalism. But even then it's childish and ovbious. Microtransactions can be predatory? Big companies are awful? No shit Sterling. good job. But criticise him and it's another thing entirely. You don't get it, the cleverness that dressing up like a faggot and reading youtube comments really is. The Skill at Wrestling. The performance art that is Jim sterling knows no bounds. Or you're just a transphobe. That's why you're unsubbing. You're the problem.
Moviebob? Well, theres a nearly 4000 page thread on him. I'm not writing another paragraph. My wrist is broken and I'm drunk.
But that leads to a simple question: If my theory is wrong, there are lolcows out there that respond well to criticism. Are there? Am I wrong?
