Jim Sterling / James "Stephanie" Sterling / James Stanton/Sexton & in memoriam TotalBiscuit (John Bain) - One Gaming Lolcow Thread

Jesus fucking christ, I remember hearing about a Jim Sterling back in 2013 when I was a wee lad from people like Total Biscuit, Angry Joe, and the likes. I had no idea he fell from grace this hard.
I don't understand why people hate him, tbh. Literally don't see the purpose. He's become irrelevant to everything anyone could care about. Nobody in video games releases a game worrying about what Jim\Stephanie\whatever Sterling is going to say next Monday. Anyone who bothers looking just sees a dumpster fire.

I mean, I guess if you happen to be an enthusiast for backyard 'wrestling' in the town he lives in you might have cause to be mad but that's about the extent to which Jim can harm anything now.
Back in the day this was the exact opposite, people respected this man's opinions, at least way more than they do now. How things change I guess.

I remember hearing about him somwhere around 2017 idk, but his clownish attire just put me off. Now seeing him gone totally deranged is just sad. Those still watching him are either KF or just ppl with a bad taste. At least it is entertaining to observe how he keeps falling into that hole.

Scott Cawthorn most likely has no idea who Jim is and probably never will and honestly good for him.
They've actually spoken to each other thrice and Scott has referenced Jim in interviews. They got along well and Jim had nothing but good to say about him, likewise Scott said nothing ill of Jim.

Quick question, after reading that simp's Twitter white knighting I have become curious: What exactly were the 'anti-LGBT' positions these politicians held?

Are they championing electro-conversion therapy, Mike Pence style? Or, as I rather suspect, do they just hold the perfectly rational belief we shouldn't be letting mentally ill people and children mutilate their bodies or harass women in public bathrooms?

Most likely it is anyone who isn't immediately letting a pack of circus fuck buddies brazenly rewrite society.

Not as extreme as Pence, just a mixture of standard Republican anti-LGBT stuff to mild support, here's all his donations:

I swear I'll never understand how people like Jim can go from having tantrums about "realistic depictions of women, oversexualization, pandering to the male gaze," and all that other moralism they spew and then turn right around and play games that crank all of it to eleven like the words had never crossed their mouths. If it weren't for double standards and all that, I suppose.
For me it's that he throws tantrums about sexualization, depictions of women, etc. Then turns around and stuffs his videos with disgusting sexualisation. Back in the day it was waving around the Saints Row dildo bat and bad dragon dildos, these days it's ballgags and over the top innuendo.

It always struck me as hypocritical for him to talk about professionalism, decorum, and how the industry should behave to appear respectable, and yet he acts the way he does. I notice that the people who made excuses for his behaviour aren't as vocal now.

I don't "hate" Jim. I hate the stupid things he says at times. I hate the dumb shit he does at times. I find him annoying repetitive at this point. I unsubbed from him in 2019. I legit wouldn't care about the transitioning if he was producing interesting content. But whining about the same nonsense and idiotic points where they just show they're good little hivemind worker bees over and over and over just isn't something I can watch. Good for them for making 160K a year. I don't care. They're allowed to succeed at being stupid. Plenty of people do it.

It makes these faggots seethe so hard that the man has more money than God and there's effectively nothing they can do to hurt him.

It's really gratifying to watch.

Why are you advocating genocide against beautiful, valid trans people? Reeeeeeeeeeeee!

I don't hate Jim, if anything I pity him. It's clear all the money and validation in the world is never going to fix whatever is broken inside him, and when you consider this is as good as his life is ever going to get, I really do think he's going to end up necking himself.

I won't celebrate when that does eventually happen, but I won't be remotely surprised either.

Your mistake is pitying a tranny, they do this by choice

IIRC, Cawthorn was going to quit the industry because of how much criticism his games got. It was only when he tossed the idea of doing it as deliberately creepy around in his head for a while that he thought he might have something. Still FNAF was never some kind of huge brand from the start, it originally released on Desura of all places. People actually got to play it and then voted for it on Greenlight.

The funny thing is Cawthorn apparently donated $50,000 to The Trevor Project a couple months ago. More than he gave to Republican candidates (and Tulsi Gabbard). So Jim's extra weird on this one as he's already paid apology money. (Plus he's given to charities like the World Wildlife Fund, St. Jude's, etc. multiple times.)
You know what is amazing? All of Scott's haters never ever donate anything. Jim himself is somewhat wealthy (well he makes more in a month than any of us make in a year) and he doesn't donate a fucking thing. Typical leftist. Unless it is tax dodging, people like Jim never put their money were their mouth is and donate to good causes.

That's all well and good, but I can't help but feel sorry for someone who had a world of opportunities before him and chose to become a total fucking clown.

It is all his fault and his problem to deal with, though, I'm under no illusion about that.

It seems to be a foreign concept to him that it is possible for people to both agree with your general sentiments and find you a very unpleasant person at the same time. Must be those damn phobes, he is clearly perfect just the way he is.

The DH guys really got the last laugh with how much Jim has imploded. They should team up with Scott and create a new game together. The REES from Jim will be all the advertising they need.
In hindsight the whole Digital Homicide vs. Jim Sterling spat were two different types of asshole personality clashing with each other. The DH guys were the shouty, obnoxious loudmouth type of asshole while Jim is the pompous, slimy type of asshole. The correct stance is not to root for either of them and watch them tear each other apart, even if one side is technically correct.

I'll admit it was entertaining, but when you really break the incident down, it was basically Jim bullying, or "punching down" as a lot of his followers might say. DH were for sure wrong for turning out asset flips and they completely overreacted to Jim's video, but it doesn't change the fact they were some pretty small, obscure, and arguably unsuccessful game dev studio while Sterling was, at the time, known for being a video game critic. And Sterling didn't know how crazy they were when he made the video. It'd be one thing if it was done in response to them suing some other reviewer or whatever, but he picked them specifically to make fun of them. It's not like thousands of people were buying their games and getting actively duped because some $1.99 game turned out to be a cheap, poorly made, rushed product. There was a reason nobody had heard of them before Jim's first video. And I'd argue there are definitely more meaningful cases of a similar dev doing something shady like that. Zoe Quinn's failed kickstarter scam, for example. Heck, that might even be worse in a way, at least DH had a finished product, even if it was a mishmash of asset flips that barely worked. Quinn raised more money then they've presumably ever raised from game sales and didn't even produce anything or officially announce the project was over.

No way, it's hilarious when it's self inflicted. Especially when it involves the person ignoring constructive criticism and turning into a self-righteous hypocrite.
