The sensible thing to do is to lay off vaccine and mask mandates so they can declare victory over COVID and figure out a way to deal with rising inflation.

So we know they won't do that.

I think it depends- if they can squeeze something from these bills (something, anything!), then it gives them a bit of confidence and some political capital to move forward on doubling down.

If not, then I do think that there's a faint hope that the light at the end of the pandemic tunnel may appear.

Definitely looking for an off-ramp, at least federally. Last night proved the dominance of bread and butter issues, and any further focus on things counteracting them will only exacerbate the pain. Better to claim a partial win on Covid now and staunch the bleeding than hold out for that perfect 100% vaccinated Mission Accomplished dream. Mind you if this happens it won't be until after Christmas - can then play up how Covid seemingly receded during the height of flu season - but there's no way some of Biden's team aren't now considering this and just how much longer Fauci's "assistance" is required.

The caveat of course will be certain blue states (e.g. California) wanting to hold onto the issue which ensures at minimum some fantastic fireworks as private state and federal bickering starts going mainstream. Does give me though we may finally be seeing the light at the end of this pandemic bullshit tunnel.

I think you are underestimating how mad people are on the ground, not just enough to vote for a statewide governor's race, but enough to show up to every school board meeting, get their facts in a row, and absolutely hound people at every level of their education system for change. The system is unsustainable, and Youngkin has proved that running against it is a winning issue. That is replicable in every state of the union. The fight has just begun, and voters know that. But winning is not going to settle them down into complacency but energize them to keep kicking until the threat is dead.
