There's actually not as much varience between head sizes as you'd think. Most average adults have a head circumference of ~22-24 inches. Children aren't too much smaller, a child of only 7-8 has a head that's about 18 inches around. Women don't necessarily have smaller heads either, my husband and I both have a 22 inch head.

For what it's worth, at least a few ancient societies did care for their disabled, at least to an extent. Sure, survival-of-the-fittest places like Sparta, and bloodthirsty, sadistic ones like Carthage, and the Aztecs existed, but those shouldn't be used to represent all cultures, and societies.

Of course things were a fuckton more violent, but human compassion, and love still existed, and people still cared for their loved ones, even if they were disabled from birth, and not from an accident.

Physically disabled, certainly. In every culture's mythology where there's a god (or more rarely a godess) of tool making/smithing, they are always disabled. Usually lame, but Vulcan's got a club foot, Hephestus has a hunchback.
