To be fair, everything is due to sexism, racism or homophobia in some way according to these people. It's reasonable to have a debate about the best way to care for COVID patients, or what should/shouldn't be done for prevention, how to recover from the economic impact or the patchwork decisionmaking of various clashing agencies.

When someone's argument is that it just doesn't exist, it's hard to go from that.

Every individual person's death or illness is statistically insignificant. The problem is that even people who say that loudly change their opinion when it affects them, or someone close to them. Every terminal cancer diagnosis is a drop in the bucket for the country's yearly death rate, but I've never heard anyone say that that brought them comfort.

Personally, I think we (as a society) are going to take a while to figure out how we're coping with this addition to our worldview: there's a new respiratory illness that'll never go away and sometimes people in their 30s just up and get crippled from it, lol. That used to happen; now it's happening again. If we take your tack, maybe the ~national dialogue~ needs to be about hubris and about how personal responsibility includes an advance directive and a discussion with the spouse about financial health.
