He still presented as normal-ish back then. Without knowing that he was an auto-loli-gynephile, you would just see a guy who was both candid about his interests re: Japanese media and capable of explaining them in a cogent way, in comparison to other anime reviewers who tailored their content according to how the winds blew in the western anime "community" and could be likened to games journalists (such as Mother's Basement, who was actually a games journalist).

Anitubers have a bad reputation of not being good, and when you're starved to find discussion particular series or to see if anyone else noticed any weird trends, you had to take what you can get. Last thing of his I had enjoyed was his Why "The Asterisk War" Sucks videos only because I was glad someone else noticed the lack of quality control going on in the industry.

Anime industry "quality control" mostly consisted on what sells and what doesn't. Barring the yearly annual fuckup(s) which can be interesting from seeing how making that industrial sausage making gone wrong to horribly wrong. To outright comedy gold when watching it unfold from the sideline and to someone else's favorite franchise.
