I forget who said it, but I believe a judge can intervene in the Jury's decision. I forget the process, however, if the jury shows obvious biases not based on the information presented in the trial the judge could make a final say on the charges. As others have stated, perhaps the ignorance of the impact of the internet will be an advantage in that scenario.
