Was thinking about something while washing dishes a few minutes ago.
If I was the Secretary of Defense, I wouldn't feel too smug about all the troops who have gotten their vaccinations. A number got them unwillingly. These troops got the shot to stay out of trouble/protect their career/family.
Suggest many of these troops will either not re-enlist, not continue past their obligated service, or retire at the first possible moment. It is very time-consuming and very expensive to train certain specialties. For example, it can take a good two years, starting at basic training, to produce a fully mission-qualified Korean/Chinese/Arabic/Pashto linguist. Takes about as long to produce a qualified fixed-wing pilot, maybe not quite as long for a rotary-wing pilot. Takes quite a while to train Navy nuclear power technicians. Likely more jobs whose training is long and expensive.
When these people leave early, the military and the country are deprived of their experience, often just when their experience can really come into play operationally. Re-enlistment rates are bad enough for linguists, and understand jet pilot retention isn't what it should be. The military then gets to spend the money to recruit and train these people's replacements.
The people who thus leave will find other jobs or depending on rank and family situation simply retire, period. Either way, they are lost to the military, because of a vaccine that's rather useless, if not dangerous. Just piss-poor bosses - NOT leaders, starting in the Oval Office.
