Overkill adds microtransactions to Payday 2

People blow things out of proportion right now. Overkill has done many shitty things in a short amount of time (microtransactions not being the worst since you can just ignore them), but many users act like the 12 year olds that they are.

oh okay, I was told it was a change in the game itself, but I guess you can't believe everything you hear, haha.

If you wanna avoid misinformation right now, best to stay away from most things payday, honestly. Especially the subreddit - they're going full on 'boycott overkill wah wah wah' because they're pissbabies.

The community is absolute garbage, but then again so are a lot of multiplayer communities. It's kind of sad to me that some people think that the microtransactions are the worst thing Overkill has done yet because for awhile they've been releasing incredibly shitty DLC, ignoring huge issues in their game, and adding low quality content to the game. People just ignored all that though and I'm not exactly sure why.
Also, I'd like to bring up that today's Crimefest reward was just some AI changes and adding more options to the Crimenet filters.

The community is riled up because of a statement made years ago, something about not having micro transactions. There's also the fact that some otherwise cosmetic changes give stat boosts. The latter is the one that I'm a little salty about, but otherwise, I don't care. An example of this would be the Bernetti 9 skin giving an extra 4 concealment, allowing players to get a 33 concealment secondary weapon again and would be near gamebreaking when it comes to LB/SB builds.

Woah wait, skins affect concealment? Did nobody take a moment to think about how this could potentially affect crit/dodge builds at all?

Where is the captain obvious rating when you need it?

And yes, this is one example. Some increase damage, accuracy, stability. You name it, it's done it.

I realized skins affected damage, stability, accuracy and shit, but I didn't think Overkill would be stupid enough to make them increase concealment.

I'll definitely agree that that's a bit sketchy.

I'm still not too bothered - besides that, it's mostly minor shit, and it's not even a competitive game anyways. If you're trying to take all the kills, you're already either supposed to be doing that, or you're not doing what you should be doing.

I just noticed that PD2stats is completely down. There's only a message on the site explaining how Overkill promised the creator of PD2Stats that the FBI files wouldn't replace his work and proceeded to ignore him completely after they went back on their promise.

>What happened?

Overkill, the developers behind Payday 2, started a promotional event where players would have to accomplish challenges such as "kill 1,000,000 LEOs with a beer bottle" and "kill 1,000,000 non-respawning gangsters that only appear in four maps" to unlock "free" content (emphases on the word "free"). However, instead what players got was the CSGO crate system except skins give weapons stat boosts. Needless to say fans were pissed that all they got was more microtransactions. The backlash was so strong and universal that even the un-official Payday 2 subreddit is pissed.

DAY 1

Overkill releases the first update for Crimefest, which is the CSGO crate system except skins buff your weapons (such as +10 to damage, magazine size, et cetra) and "balance" updates that make some weapons completely useless and other insanely overpowered. For example, multiple handguns now do the same amount of damage as the assault rifles chambered for 5.56x45mm and some do even more damage than the Sniper Rifles chambered for 7.62x51mm.

Not only does the update breaks the balance for weapons, it also breaks the entire modding scene completely. Developer approved mod "Hoxhud", and subsequently all mods, have stopped working completely.

DAY 2

Overkill releases five masks, one of which is a tiara that isn't even placed right on the head.

http://www.pd2stats.com/ is dead after Overkill promises that their own player stat system, the FBI files, would not make pd2stats.com obsolete and told him that he would work on the FBI files. However, shortly afterwards Overkill ignored all of his calls and let his website die.

Wulf, one of the original members and voice actor for the character Wolf, leaves Overkill to make his own studio

DAY 3

Overkill releases a heist called "Aftershock" in which you must steal cargo from heavily armored transport trucks in the aftermath of Las Angeles after a massive earthquake devastating the city, the cargo being the weapon skin safes.

In the heist you're intended to utilize trucks to transport the safes to the pickup point, however it's much easier and faster to throw the safes over the bridge, right next to the pickup point, and haul them on foot. Once you get to the pickup point, a helicopter picks you up and you get a "scenic view" of the collapsed city, however not much is destroyed besides the area you play in, and you're treated to watching all the cars despawn several seconds before the screen fades to black.

The Wolf mask you can purchase on the Overkill store has been taken down as well, presumably because Wulf's voice actor quit and OK will kill him off. Players are speculating who will replace Wolf as the "canon" fourth member and all signs are pointing at Clover.

DAY 4

AI can now trade hostages for teammates, CRIME.NET filter that allows for more precise matchmaking, as well as breaking models for the Glock 18's skeletal stock.

Overkill also released a statement regarding this crimefest shitfest.

>"We've read a lot of your feedback. We're aware that there are those of you who are unhappy or concerned about the Black Market update. Once Crimefest and all its content is out we’ll discuss this with you along with the other new features that were added. While we usually get back to you straight away when you have feedback, right now we’re busy as hell making sure we finish all the content we prepared on time."

They've also stated that breaking mods like Hoxhud was unintentional and they're still accepting them, but didn't state they're working on a fix. Also, the VA for Bain has left the company, but will still voice him, but for freelancing purposes. So far, it seems like a "filler" day.

DAY 5

Overkill releases two new weapons, A LMG that has a usable bipod, making it the only free LMG in the game, and a slingshot. Road to crimefest updated with a image of Wolf leaving.

Jim Sterling made a video criticizing Overkill's microtransactions, but did not mention pd2stats.

DAY 6

Overkill ported the popular Paday 1 map, First World Bank, in Payday 2. Along with it are a couple of bugs, such as SWAT vans causing the game to crash on all maps and the fact that if you open the vault stealthily but got caught you'd have to re-open it the way you'd do it if you went loud even though the door is already open.

Ignore my first attempt.

Can't confirm this, but apparently the reward for the Completely Overkill Pack that cost 20 bucks is a safe.

They also added drills as end-of-level card drops on Day 6, so you can conceivably get one of these ugly weapon skins for free. If you really want to.

I feel like the subreddit is way overreacting to things. Is it not as good as it could've been? Maybe, but complaining about something that changes stats so little in a game that's entirely about cooperation seems dumb to me.

The last day of Crimefest added literal fucking meme masks to the game and a jumping animation. That's it for the last day, what a truly amazing Crimefest.
So that's a total of 6 completely shit Crimefest updates that added very little to the game. The masks from Day 2, that update that changed the hostage trading a little, the preferred character update, that free LMG, the SWAT turret update, and now the meme masks.
On the bright side though, First World Bank and Slaughterhouse are nice heists. Then again, both of those heists are just pulled from the first game and actually play better in the first game.

Yeah it has been pretty weak sauce; honestly in 470 hours I didn't even know that there wasn't a jumping animation.

I think the problem was that they were a bit too afraid of not managing to get everything out in time for crimefest, so they decided to play it a lot safer than normal even if I think that was a kinda dumb decision. I dunno though - I'm not Overkill.

I'm going to disagree just because what they added into the game doesn't seem difficult at all to add. First World Bank and Slaughterhouse were pretty much be ripped straight from PD:TH and put into the game, but I can't confirm this. Just going by eye, it looks like majority of the assets on each map are the same minus the very few additions of things like the vent for the money and the slightly new bank layout on FWB. I wouldn't be surprised if this is true due to the fact that Payday 2 itself has a LOT of borrowed assets from Payday: The Heist. So I'd say the only content they had to take time and seriously make was for the Aftershock heist and the weapon skins. The rest seems like not a lot of work and just plain disappointing.
So I don't know if they chose to play it safe. It feels more like a lack of effort and original thought than an issue with playing it safe. On the bright side, I'm very happy PD2 didn't go F2P like some people predicted because I like not having my purchases mean nothing.

I'm not saying it wasn't a lack of effort, because it feels half-assed, but I think that it's that they're getting kind of afraid of pissing off the ever displeased community. Truth is, the subreddit would bitch and moan about anything, only thing they'd be happy with is if the game was returned to the state it was in when it was released.

To be honest, never really got why the community is like that, but it is what it is.

The subreddit was never bad. Most people supported Overkill through all the DLC and lazy updates, the only thing that has managed to piss off the community to this extent are the microtranscations. The game at release was buggy and bare, nobody wants that. People just seem to want microtransactions to go away so they can continue to buy new weapon packs for 5 bucks each without a shred of self awareness.
