So the final installment of Ryan Murphy's oft delayed "American Crime Story: Impeachment" just aired and it's got me thinking about Murphy's take on the end of 90s Clinton debacle.
He ends the story on a weird note: Linda Tripp (who got a way better and more heroic take than I would expect) gives a speech to her daughter decrying the idea that popular people can literally get away with ANYTHING being the story of her life (besides the Clintons, she reveals how her entire hometown knew that her dad was a serial adulterer and covered for him until he finally decided to abandon Linda and her mom for a mistress he eventually married). Combined with a shockingly out of character blackpill scene for Coulter and Drudge (their final scene in the narrative) where Coulter is decrying the way the Clinton got away scott free, Hillary getting rewarded with the NY Senate seat and huge popularity that fed into her delusions that she could be President, and the best the GOP being able to muster for 2000 being "the stupid Bush brother".
I have to wonder why Murphy went this route, since it clearly doesn't paint a full picture of the endgame of the Impeachment. Clinton won the war, but was so badly damaged that Gore (with Lieberman whispering in his ear) distanced himself from Bill in 2000's election. Along with a sort of "Tora Tora Tora" type ominous warning that Clinton's antics awoke a monster in the form of the Religious Right, which fell into the arms of the Cheney gang. who made a compact with the Religious Right to get Bush II elected and used 9-11 to basically annihilate the Democrats and cast them into the wilderness for a generation. Closest we get is a bit where Drudge and Coulter discuss Fox News circa 1999 being "the future" of conservative news but that's about it.
But Tripp's scene with her daughter makes me think about Biden, why he keeps pushing the "most popular president ever" meme, and why the "Let's Go Brandon" thing seems to be a huge trigger for the left.
The left literally can get away with murder so long as they are popular and can scapegoat and blood libel it's enemies. Hell, Murphy even makes a point MULTIPLE TIMES in Impeachment that Bill GLEEFULLY threw Monica under the bus and let everyone call her a psycho stalker before owning up to his adultery.
It's why the left has moved so fast to bury their humiliating defeat in Virginia and freaking called in favorites at PBS to make fictional Muppets shill the Covid vaccine. The modern DNC powerbase HINGES on the idea of their popularity and ability to vilify and destroy their enemies and crybully their way out of any jam. Hell, see them currently trying to pull an Andrew Jackson, DARING the Supreme Court to stop him as he engages in explicit violation of court orders. Imagine if fucking Donald Trump did that!
In my youth, I bought into the blue pill that the Clintons were right and that the conservative forces were the villains in that sordid piece of American history. But more and more, as time passes, I find it hard to believe that we as a nation collectively sewed our eyes shut and our ears too to what Bill did. And how that bred into us, a deep seeded desire to give the Democrats a free and full pass against all criticisms, which carried over to Obama and now Biden, that amounts to "He's evil and corrupt, but by God I'm NOT going to give the Republicans victory by saying they are right!".....
Will Biden voters awaken or will they stay asleep and willfully blind and deaf to the corruption around them? Or will they go down with the ship and then some, citing the lies the DNC spread to basically stay willfully ignorant because they would rather believe the lie than let the other side win?
