IIRC Putin DESPERATELY wants to reabsorb Ukraine back into Russia proper as far as Ukraine being a separate state/nation drives Putin and other Russians crazy with "eat shit from a toilet" tard rage.
So both sides of the political aisles wants to keep Ukraine it's own nation because it's one of the few ways the US has to torment Putin overtly, given how much the idea of of Ukraine existing makes Putin angry.
