Obvious creepiness aside, why are do they always assume they'd be pretty and popular and have so much fun if they were high school girls? If you're that much of a miserable fuckup, even if you were magically a teenage girl you'd probably be a miserable fuckup of a girl too, it's not like high school is automatically a magical and fun time for girls.

Serious answer: it's probably in part because of the depression.
They are too invested in the idea of what could have been rather than what is. When you feel like you took the wrong decision / are not where you are supposed to be, it's tempting to escape one's sad reality that way: by daydreaming about what life could have been.

Also the (generally socially-sanctionned) fetishism for "girlhood" and the tendency to think that transition is a silver bullet.
